Gabriela Mistral Nebula and the Pendant

Taken over the May new moon at Wiruna.

Edit: I've changed the link to give the larger Astrobin image as the first point of call
http://www.astrobin.com/full/193066/0/
It has a much higher impact than the smaller version here http://www.astrobin.com/193066/

Telescope: 12.5"CDK
Mount: AP900
Camera: FLI Proline 16803
Exposures 13 x 5min R, 12 x 5min G, 12 x 5min B
FOV: 49' x 49'
Processing: PixInsight

I'm happy with the way that the Pendant (NGC 3293) turned out, but *IMO the GM nebula lacks a bit of punch.* Edit: I've changed my mind about this, but it's really necessary to look at the large version.

Very nice, Geoff.

The stars and star colours throughout the field, including the background, are beautiful.

You've shown the surprisingly large number of (presumed) ascending giant phase stars in the Pendant / Gem cluster very well, as well as the strong blue reflection nebulosity and hints of H-alpha glow.

On that latter point, Trish and I wasted a lot of time trying to photograph it in Ha/OIII. Unrewarding compared with your colour shot.

Geoff, this is an excellent, beautifully balanced and coloured image, fantastic I really like it (possibly even my favourite image of yours now!) Gabriela looks great IMO, well done!

Thanks guys. I hadn't expected such positive comments on this one. Maybe one can be too close to the action.

I agree with Mike here. This is a beautiful image. At first it didn't impact me in the smaller size image. But in the larger image it really shines.

I personally love images that show a range of colours and not just one or two.

The beautiful blue reflection nebula is a bit like a Pleiades.

The lovely crimson colour of the GM neb to me is just perfect. Very Marco-esque!

Your stars and star colours are to die for.

Greg.

Thanks Marc. I applied a bit of saturation to the blue to make it stand out. (But homogeneously throughout the image in accordance with PI principles)

Thanks for all the positive comments Greg. I agree that the larger image has much more impact--weird really.

Beautiful work Geoff!

Nice processing, particularly like the way you handled the stars.

Cheers,

Justin.

The attached thumbnail doesn't do it justice the Astrobin full frame is truly awsome Geoff.

This is an excellent image Geoff! You were right to add the link to the larger image, it is necessary to make it justice. I love both colors and details, honestly I don't see why you would not be pleased with the result

Cool image with great colours. I really like this composition. Excellent detail around Gabriela too. The whispy gas and dust around the upper part is cool.

Without doubt, one of your best Geoff. You've presented a visual feast which is nothing short of impressive. I'll take more of that, thanks!

Gorgeous Image, Geoff. The reflection nebula around the cluster has come out really well and the star colours are great. Top job

Yes, big is obviously better in this case. Thanks Michael

Thanks Marco. As others have said, it somehow really pops in the large version.

Thanks Paul. Actually, if truth be admitted there was a bit of luck here. I was going for the Pendant, but, thanks to the wide field of the 16803 chip, when the first image downloaded I noticed the Gabriela Mistral in the corner. Then rapid reframing was the order of the night.

Thanks for such generous comments Rick and Rex. I know the pic is good, but I'm still a bit surprised by the very positive comments it's been getting.
