computer packed it in - help...?

I shut down my PC as usual last night, but when I went to turn it on today all I get is the power and HD LEDs coming on and the CD-ROM read LED flashing briefly. No fans turn on and the hard drives don't fire up either. I can turn the LEDs off by holding the power button for several seconds.

Anyone have any idea what possessed my puter?

The PC is little over 2 y.o. with an AMD Athlon XP 2500 CPU on an Nvidia M/B.

PS. I am writing this post on a Pentium-2 Omnibook with 32MB of RAM and a 2G HD. It works but very slow because it's swapping all the time.

you need to replace the power supply, the primary power circuit is dead in the power supply. they are about $45, and you can do it yourself, or pay a trained techy to do it for you!

Thanks for the swift and precise diagnosis, Houghy! I'll try a power supply from an older incomplete PC I have lying around.

Eric, thanks for the tip but following that link paralysed this 32MB laptop for about 5 minutes. I just closed the page at the earliest opportunity. I'll have a look at it at work tomorrow.

lol just tested the site. seems fine. but yea, that place is the cheapest in Melbourne, you can say close to swap meet prices and some items are even better . also, check the power cable connecting to the motherboard. make sure it is tight.

You're a legend Houghy! Bought new power supply ATX 480W, $45 from a local shop. Worked like a charm. Thanks heaps!

Reminds me of last time my pc died.

I bought a new PSU . Still no good.
New motherboard. Still cactus.

Finally gave in and took it to the pc shop. I needed new ram and a new HD as well

If I had of taken it to the store from the beginning I would have bought a brand new one instead of spending 2/3 the cost resurrecting a 3yo pc

Geoff, you should have consulted with Houghy b4 doing anything about it!

For the record, the old power supply was a "ModelT-A450W ATX P4" - what the sticker on the housing says. It came with the PC tower case for $65 total.
