Dear IIS team,
I have had a guy contact me trying to get me to purchase his telescope that he wants to sell.
This is a partially completed Newtonian 8 inch mounting up an EA England primary. I do recall that I sold this guy the optic, and most likely I may have sold him some accessories - but what they are ? He has not provided me with details.
The optic came into my care as head of the Astro Soc of Melb - and I sold it to him and passed the funds (in full) for this supply to the estate of the previous owner (who was sadly deceased). The Society has the opportunity & capability to do this type of thing, dependant on the circumstances & situation. This is performed purely as a "societally conscious" responsibility to our geographic region - nothing more. We are merely attempting to be a good citizen of astronomy, nothing more, nothing less.
I can attest that the primary mirror was at the time he purchased it a very capable optic. EA England did make very capable primary mirrors, and this unit was (when supplied to him) an example of their very good quality. What has happened in the interim period since supplying him with the unit is unknown to myself.
He also has some accessories to sell as well, but I do not have a list, merely his blanket verbal statement "
accessories".
The only detail in the accessories provided is that there is a Tak LE eyepiece that he claims is worth over $400, where it is actually available brand new from Tak here in Oz at $298 (published webpage price), so his data on that item is unsound.
I am not sure what he is actually asking for the unit, as his claims about what he actually paid for all the gear are unsupported with formal evidence, merely verbal telephone commentary.
I recommend that if this optic has been cared for appropriately that this telescope's optic is likely a very good unit, but without seeing and testing the gear I am unable to attest further. Plus the condition since leaving my care some years ago is unable for myself to attest to.
His behaviour has been such over the phone from numerous phone calls that I am unwilling to assist him further with this project. He insists that I "take the unit back" and take responsibility for selling it for him, a statement to which I am simply going to ignore. Helping people years ago does not implicitly imply that anyone accepts responsibility for their gear ongoing into the future at the buyer's whim, how ridiculous
I recommend that fellow IIS members are welcome to discuss and consider his offer and his gear, but should do so with some caution, as IMHO he is all over the place.
Clear skies.
Rgds,
Astromelb.
