The Flying Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) IC 4628

IC 4628 - "The Flying Dutchman" is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the cosmic oceans of Scorpius forever.
When sighted the ship is reportedly glowing with ghostly light. Here it has an orange keel and blue sails, centre of frame - can you see it?

(Sorry, maybe it's just me but I can't see any prawns here! )

Tricolour Narrowband taken over two glorious clear nights from the new Snake Valley Astro camp, Victoria - Australia.
(I highly recommend this camp, very relaxed, well organized, great facilities and good company. )

4 hrs x 900secs Ha 5nm
4 hrs x 900 secs S2 5nm
3 hrs x 900 secs O3 binx2 5mn
RGB stars

Processed in Startools, PS6 & Nik filters using J-P Metsavainio's Astroanarchy Tone mapping method. http://astroanarchy.blogspot.com.au/...e-mapping.html

This is the nicest blend I have seen from you Andy. No apparent noise control and good sharp detail.

Well thanks Greg - that's very high praise coming from you - Not sure it's deserved though. Personally I can think of others who are far more deserving of that title, but I'm delighted to be considered following in their far more experienced footsteps. Cheers

Cheers Marc, I was hoping it would turn out ok. Spending two nights under a dark sky with a bunch of other imagers around me during new moon and shooting narrowband? Some would say that's crazy but I believe that it does make a difference. The pressure was on to come up with something reasonable, and I do enjoy the creative aspects of NB. Thanks for the feedback

Thank you very much indeed Paul. You are one of the guys that inspire me so much and you continue to raise the bar higher and higher - so I'm delighted that you like it. A nice dark sky and lots of data certainly helped! The processing method seems to be getting a bit better each time, although it still takes me forever to get one of these images up. Cheers

Excellent Andy, I like the gaseous wispy feel you have maintained, funky but moody, even a little dark (in a mood sense) colour palette, nice

This is just awesome Andy. I have tried to process this area many times and always came short so I just love the way you managed to keep the depth in this FOV

Thanks Ross, it's a little easier when the target is A) bright and B) rich in all 3 NB wavelengths. cheers

Thanks DJ, it was a nice one to do and the dark skies really help with capturing the detail. Cheers

At first, I had to look hard to identify the object, but it was because I'm used to see it upside down.
Very impressive, lots of detail and nice colors.

Andy, that's REALLY good. Extra good.

I can see your Flying Dutchman, but if you turn the image upside down, you will see the face of Jar Jar Binks. Two glowing reptilian eyes over the now upside-down hull of your boat. So dual purpose.

Thanks Geert, I think these objects don't really need to have a specific orientation, whatever looks best is fine with me. Thanks for your feedback all the way from Chile, Hola!

Thanks Mike - appreciate your taking time to comment and for the nice compliment - btw I can't stand Jar Jar but I do see what you mean!
