Eta Carina Narrowband

Hi all,

Received my OIII and SII filters last week, thought i'd give them a try last night.
This image could use some star reduction, and maybe I need a field flattener, for another time maybe. Feel free to let me know what your thoughts are.

Detals are:
10x5min Ha, OIII, Sii. Guided, taken with an Atik 314L+ though an Orion EON72 ED

nice work Goran,
you've stitched nicely! as you say a bit of star reduction would help it out a bit but - nice job!

Thanks Russell,

On another topic, I notice you have a Moonlight crayford with the high res stepper motor. How are you finding that? I think I have an issue with the wight of my CCD and filter wheel sagging the focuser so i'm looking for a replacement ( for my 8" GSO Newt ).

Goran.

hi Goran,

I love the moonlite with the high res stepper motor. I just use the v2 mini controller rather than the digital display controller - which is fine for my needs.

it has excellent control and you can adjust tension if you are carrying heavier loads. I plan to eventually put another one on my dob to aid in focussing for planetary imaging. I believe it even has tilt adjustment although I haven't tried that.

highly recommended - almost a necessity really!

cheers

Russ

ps I also checked out feathertouch which also has high quality options - but I went with the moonlite for the price. both had excellent customer service as I was in contact with both companies before making my decision.

That's a fantastic image Goran.

The narrow band really does bring out the detail around the keyhole.
Perhaps its just that its not a bright red/pink like standard RGB images those soft blues and greens are easier on the eye.

Do you have a crop of the central area you could post?

I have a the same problem effecting my images with my old JMI focuser.
It just cant handle the weight of my Atik 383 and filter wheel .

My next purchase will definitely be a moonlight focuser.

If I knew that this was the cause of my issues with the newt, i would have bought one yesterday! I have to get myself down to and IIS event or to heathcote or something to see if someone can give me some advice. The only reason I actually took this Carina image is because I gave up on M83 through the Newt because although everything was pointing to a good collimation, when I put the camera back on and take an exposure, the start still seem to streak.
Funny thing is that the moonlite with the stepper and controller is about twice the value of the scope it will go on

Thanks for the feedback Michael.
Here is a crop, but this image is already way under sampled (3.33"/pixel), so if i crop it, it looks pretty bad.

Yeah my CCD and wheel is probably close to 1kg, so when you point the scope, it pulls down, down/left etc... I have to try and either take the wheel off, or use my DSLR which would cut the weight down by half, and see if that changes things.

So anyway, here is a crop, and I have also added some boost to the color as the original appeared a bit faded on some monitors.

Goran.

Nice first light for your filters, Goran!

I notice your original image (didn't check the others) has an Adobe RGB colour profile. It's quite possible that the folks who found the colour muted just weren't using colour managed applications to view it. sRGB is probably a better choice for general web viewing.

Cheers,
Rick.

Rick I have to say, that didn't even occur to me, and you are probably quite correct. It looks quite nice on my iMac which I process with, but my PC and iPad it looks quite faded. I'm not even sure where the colorspace is set in PI. Must look into it.

You can set your processing colour space in the preferences. I like to use a wide gamut space. Then you can convert the final version to sRGB with ICCProfileTransformation.

Cheers,
Rick.
