Maxim and Canon - getting them to play

It's been a while since I had a play with OSC and a Canon EOS DSLR. But I've recently been messing about with a small rig I want to set aside for travelling and the camera I have on hand is an older EOS350D. Don't laugh - they're still a decent 8MP camera.
But I can't get Maxim to interface with it effectively.
I'm doing this on a Laptop running XP SP3. And I've loaded the drivers correctly. I know this because BackyardEOS and the Canon EOS Utility both control the camera just fine. But I like to use Maxim to control the scope and to do plate solving. So if i can, I'd like to use Maxim to guide and image as well.
But Maxim seems to be very uncomfortable with this camera. It will find the camera and connect to it if I set it up as a Canon EOS I but not as an EOS II. I always thought the 350D was a Digic II processor so my instinct has been telling me the camera ought to be recognised by maxim as an EOS II. But it isn't. And if I set it up as EOS I, the shutter release doesn't function.

So I'm puzzled and wondering if there are any IISers who can remember the 350D and have any suggestions.
