100ft usb cable - get your cheque book ready

I've seen a few discussions on how to extend your usb cable range.
Well here is a video on just such a cable which combines optical technology and USB for a cable at 30m long.
Not as cheap as the active cables but it's 3 times longer.
Just might be long enough to get to the obsy in the back yard.
Add a multi point hub and you're on your way.
Power of your desktop connected to your remote set up.
Compared to a remote pc, who knows, but it certainly opens more doors in this area.

I think you'd be better off getting a remote PC to do most of the work and then a wireless network to connect to it. I think you'd end up with so much extra hassle trying to run your devices via a long USB. Still, it's an option I guess... just not something I'll ever pursue.

I've posted this many times - Lindy have a system that will extend up to 50metres. Not cheap, but I have used it up to 20 metres with success. One cable to my computer and a four port hub at the far end.

Nonetheless, I agree with Chris - this is what I now do.

Interesting on the 20m active cable.
I hadn't seen one of that length.
Good to know it can work in proper practice.

I'd be surprised if many took this option over a remote link but maybe a viable route for those less savvy in the ways of networking, although windows has certainly made that challenge much simpler in recent years.
Perhaps it may also be handy for setting up a remote rig out in the field.

I just like the fact that technology constantly offers us new choices that can be explored
