Alan, I think the red is an artifact of the imaging process (RGB align on stars, then RGB align on comet, then superimpose and try to avoid fringing). I have a better repro on Astrobin that shows the colour of the comet more accurately.

Probably, but very low in the sky. It's about 15-20 degrees above the horizon at sunset at my latitude.

I couldn't see it visually. Too hard to image now and details are getting washed out.
