Van Allen Obituary

Professor James Van Allen, discoverer of the high intensity energy belt that surrounds the earth died on 9th August. A good obituary was published in the UK today.

And not a word in my local press (unless I missed it - a distinct possibility). That is most disappointing (on either count). He was indeed a giant and, to corrupt a phrase, one strong enough for others to stand comfortably upon his shoulders.

I just did a quick search on the SMH and "The West Australian" websites just now. The SMG ran an obituary on the 8th, supplied by the Daily Telegraph (London).

Needless to say The West didn't bother running an obituary.
