My First Jupiter 19/08

Hi All,

Well last night i got some imaing of Jupiter done, not as good as i hoped but something to share as my first try. Please reffer to this thread for some background on my problems with imaging Jupiter.

Also as an unplanned item, i manged to nab Jupiter and 3 moons while playing with the exposure settings. So i have converted this to a animated Gif. It was taken at 8:41pm last night, but i have not had a chance to look up the names of the moons etc.

First the animation settings unknown. Then one of my 100 frame sequences at 10fps 1/75 using 640x480 @ I420 mode.

Nice results, well done for going out and giving it a go in spite of your difficulties. I liked the animation of the disc and moons bobbing along. It's quite extraordinary what kind of solar system events can be imaged by amateurs today; truly we are living in wonderful times for amateur astronomy.

Asimov and you lot are way down on the slipery slide mate. I tried the 5x poweremate could not track manually well enough to image. Then tried 2x and still no good, had to go with no barlow imaging. Hence the smal scale.
My collimation also needs work, one side is ok the other side seems of centre. But then i have not colimated my scope since i got it a year ago. I need to put some time into geting the mirror out centre spot it and then colimate the whole optical train. I also need tracking, geting tired of manual tracking it takes to long to get setup for the shot. And by the time your set Joops geting lower and lower.

The moons were a bonus but i am going to give these Satelites more time now i know i can get em.

I admire your persistence Wolfie, but I also know its lack of funds stopping you from driving the dob. It's also stopping me from doing a lot of stuff.

Yeah, Iv'e had a driven EQ mount for close on 12 mths, not sure what Pauls on...but I want some!

Looking forward to you getting either a platform or motorizing it somehow.

It jsut Microsoft Gif Animator, i literlay just pointed to the AVI and ticked a box for looop forever and save. Thats it.

sweet..what ccd are you useing??how are you guiding?

I am using a Neximage and no guiding, I just point and have the camera set such that the planet drifts left to right with the rotation of the earth. I have to do this several times to get the exposure settings and focus right and then finaly capture. Once i have everything just right i record about 30sec and then reset for the next 30sec. During my tweaking i noticed that if i left set to Auto that i could see Jupiter and its moons. I think this is because on auto settings the gain is set to 100%. I will have to do this again to see what the exact settings were but its very tiring work.
