New toys!

Hi all,

My brother-in-law Adam recently bought a new 10" Dob, and I recently bought a Canon 6D and Samyang 14mm lens. So we headed out west of Brisbane on Friday night to test them out. Very impressed with both of them! Here's a couple of images. Larger versions on Flickr if you're interested (see my signature).

Terrific shots but the last one is the cracker. I personally am not a fan of portrait mode for these style of shots but the pano is wonderful. It really communicates the fun and joy of viewing the night sky universe very well and is a nice composition with you and your scope as the main subject and the MW a nice accompaniment.

To get the milky way, did u take multiple long exposure shots and then stacked them? I am just starting to use a canon 1100D so any pointers will be much appreciated. Thanks mate

Thanks Niv! These were single 30 second exposures with the Samyang 14mm lens @ f/2.8 and 6400 ISO (except for the last one, which is a panorama made up if a series of single 30 sec exposures). You could take multiple images and stack them to enhance the Milky Way, but you would then have to manually merge the stack with a foreground image. So it's easier to just take single exposures. With the 1100D, I would try single exposures at 3200 ISO using the fastest and widest lens that you have. The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 would be the best option.
