Photography in public places, ever been got after?

Had a day at Blackbutt spring fair, was taking a few general photos, saw a unusual trailer,so took photo of it.Not long after I took it I had a man man yelling at me and getting after me for taking the photo of trailer.Nearly had to hand camera to friend to biff the aggressive fellow,as he really going off his head.

My friend, later said to me she noticed asians working for him,and they ducked off quickly when I took photos of trailer,I am now thinking they may have been illegal boat people he was paying slave rates.

Never had an issue with taken photos in a public fair, anyone know the legals?

Anyhow here are the offending photos.I took these as to show friends-never seen something like this before, and a quick snap can explain things better.

There's plenty of info available via google. Here's one:

I can't see that he had any rights to complain.

A colleague of mine - Algerian heritage, raised in Canada, worked many years in Hoston was recently approached by a thong and singlet wearing paragon of Australiana while out photographing some of the heritage listed buildings in Fremantle. 'You Iranian?' Friend shakes his head. 'Hezbolleh?' Friend walks off. Makes you proud.
Cheers,
Andrew

Perhaps he was worried you were taking photos to copy his trailer and steal some of his business? I know it's pretty cutthroat out there with many of these businesses (mobile lunch/coffee etc)

Never thought of that, perhaps it was that, seemed an extreme response for someone taking a photograph.I'd certainly not be interested in such a business, too many overheads in such a venture.Looks like some people may have read something into my first post,I certainly have nothing against asian people,in fact those that know me well, know most of my good friends are various parts of Asia.I recently took a chap from India out deer hunting.

Maybe he sampled his slaves cooking and reacted like a madman full of regret?

Not sure if you have read my first post, but I clearly state 'illegal boat people',there is no inference in running down a race.Clearly, some people on this forum have nothing better to do,than read things into peoples' posts

So how do you know they were illegal boat people?? Because they were Asian and didn't like their photo being taken?? Nope, no racist inference there at all...

Chris,
My response was not a suggestion that you may have been making a racist reference, but more because it made you appear as ignorant as our current PM and the Immigration Minister.

Think things have got way out of hand here,I've reported this to mods,I think the personal attacks here are not on,I'd have thought better of the people on this forum

I simply asked about taking photos in public,re an incident I had yesterday,I recounted some of that incident, but obviously people have taken that right of the rails.

It appears I should have re worded that account,firstly... the person appearing the owner and in charge of the said pizza van,was clearly caucasian in appearance, the workers that my friend notice were not.As I walked past I felt like taking some photos of the pizza cooker as had never seen one before,as doing so,my friend observed the workers scattering behind the trailer, shortly after the caucasian male came at in an aggressive fashion. We wondered what was going on,the original observation is likely wrong, and @Mr B's comment may have been closer to the mark.

Anyhow-I'd never thought a simple 'chit-chat' post would get so out of hand. This forum generally is not quite as friendly as it use to be,and I can now understand why a number have been turned off in more recent times, some former members have been turned off forever, which is a shame, but I can understand why.If one has to make a post like giving a statement to a police officer, its a turn off

Chris,
Mine was not a personal attack, the term 'illegal boat people' is a misnomer, as is illegal immigrant when used to refer to asylum seekers. Perhaps you meant that the people that your friend saw may have been working without the required visas.

Dosn't like people personally attacking him, assumes anyone who looks Asian is an "illegal boat person".

Surely Chris's point in the original post was that the vendor's reaction to the taking of the picture seemed rather bizarre and over the top and that combined with the workers' actions made one suspicious of what the situation might be. Having worked in the relevant area I must admit that alarm bells would be ringing loud and clear.
