I was turing into a local street and almost failed to notice a car coming in the opposite direction. It was a grey colour, of course, which seems to be the least visible colour for a car, especially at dusk. One of my first cars (a Toyota Celica) was yellow, the colour of safety. Not that common these days, but becoming more so. What intrigued me was some research done in NZ on car colours and crashes. It found that grey cars are the LEAST likely to be involved in a collision. I have no explanation for this, and neither did the researchers. Do people who buy grey cars drive better than the rest of us? Are grey cars driven predominately by women and old men?
Anyone have any suggestions?
Maybe grey is the colour of choice of conservative people.
I recall one such survey and it was the white cars that were involved in less accidents. My wife has just smashed a white car and smashed the previous white car twice so it was maybe her stats that moved grey into first place.

My wife and I did a short survey during the last few weeks concerning those driving in the overcast weather we were experiencing at the time. We came to the conclusion - no statistics available, this was very much an on-the-spot thing - that 80% of lighter cars (of whatever colour) used headlights when conditions were gloomy and 80% of the darker cars (of whatever colour) did not.
Disclosure: I drive a car of white appearance and flick on its headlights as soon as I feel that it's necessary (meaning that someone may not see me coming otherwise).
Right: Now on to those vehicles flaunting fog lights - especially the BLUE ones - which are . . . then again, perhaps not.
Don't know about Grey but our new drive is of a colour that I think makes it stand out and safer, see attached image. Funny there is a article in the Sunday mail this weekend about green coloured cars some manufacturers are dropping green and some are adding green, I think it's good colour myself. I also drive a deep purple (Cosmo) Holden Ute and I have the lights on all the time because of the dark close to bitumen colour. Good luck with your new car.
I love the colour Grey specialy the dark grey....My father in law just purchased a new Falcon XR8 UTE Grey just 9 days ago and it is now at the paint shop getting $7500 worth of front end damage done because of the accident he was involved in 3 days ago.....lol
Two years ago we bought a silver (grey?) Honda... prior to that we had zero accident... de nada, none, zilch.. Since we had the car, we've had four! And all of them not our fault... people running into us!!!
My theory was that the silver/grey colour is too close to the road colour... I don't know, but I'm glad we had white cars to get our Rating One!
Interesting subject colours!!...One would have to collect information from the local rego branch to find out the most of which colour is on the road and of course the insurance mobs to get their stats as well...I find grey a more of a background colour...makes it hard to judge oncoming speed...brighter colours are certainly more noticeable..our latest is car is coloured "acid rush" a bright gold and it does stand out nicely..and it shows up the dirt easy too!!..more work on Sundays LOL!!
If you can believe the paper according to DuPont silver has been the most popular car colour worldwide for six years but grey, blue and black are catching up. The most popular falcon colour is white followed by Fords two shades of silver.
My son and I noticed only the other day that there are more silver cars on the road than any other colour.
My old Bluebird was a silvery blue colour and EVERY DAY someone would pull out in front of us, causing a near collision. Why? Because they just couldn't see us. Wet weather was the worst time, we were invisable to everyone then.
People with grey/silvery cars are better drivers because they have more experience dodging others who do not see us. LOL
Dark colour cars show every speck of dirt and dust thus requiring more frequent washing.
White/light coloured cars still look relatively clean even with a fair coating of dust.
being a grey car owner/driver i can tell you that it doesnt matter what colour car you have people are going to run into you anyhow
you just cant do anything for poor drivers... i have had 2 blue cars (one light and one dark), 1 white car, and my current grey (silver). I didnt feel particularly safe in any of them
I agree with Ving on this one, at least silver or grey,,,hides the primer better...... but if safety were an issue Id go white,,,with a roof rack that had a blue side and a red side...tho you wouldnt want to be in a hurry to get anywhere tho ...
Here is my ute which takes most of my time. This was taken when we just finished the color coat. All thats needed now is the clear coat and put it all back together. Oh and spray my new tailgate and front apron that I pick up at the swap meet for 100 bucks each both still in the box
