Sunspot 904 on 16th August - a lesson in seeing!

Hello,

Here is an illustration of the incredible range of seeing that can occur in a single AVI when imaging the Sun using my Philips ToUcam.

This is Sunspot 904, captured on 16th August 2006, at 10:56am AEST (GMT+10) using my C9.25 and a Televue x2.5 Powermate. Each image is a single frame from the same 1800 frame AVI; the top image = Frame 1121, the bottom image = Frame 13.

Out of 1800 frames, less than 10 look like the top image, the remainder are similar in quality to the bottom image, which isn’t the worst I have seen. This is a graphic illustration of good and bad moments of seeing when viewed through the prevailing jet stream.

Acquired in K3CCDTools, 1/100 sec, 5fps. Frames grabbed in Virtual Dub.

It’s amazing how Registax can turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.

How long did it take you to sort through 1800 frames and select the best 10? I've occasionally thought about doing the same, but the amount of time involved, even doing just it for just 600 frames, has put me off.

Full aperture Baader film by Astrozap, purchased from Scopestuff in the USA. This is the visual film, not the photographic only version, which lets much more energy through, but should never be used for visual observations.

Not long at all - I didn't do it manually - apologies for the confusion. I skimmed through the avi with the Registax slider and selected a reasonable reference image and then kicked off the Registax process. I used "Compress" and 95% Quality and the end result was a stacklist of 6 frames and 1121 was top of the list. So, what you are looking at is the single frame 1121, as when I tried to stack the 6 good frames, the stacked result was worse than the single frame.
