I'm in Victoria currently looking at Jupiter it's not the best seeing but with my 10" and a 12.5mm ep I'm seeing the two bands well and I keep seeing a small dot coming and going towards the top right of Jupiter am I seeing the big red dot or just imagining things.
Great photo I'm excited that I did see the red dot.
What telescope where you using?
I can never seen to get a clear view through my 10" I'm not sure if it's the sky or my scope or eyes but when I use my 12.5mm or 9mm I can make out the two main bands and last night I could only just see the red dot come and go.
The bands are not sharp just kind of a faintly darker.
I have a laser collimator so my scope should be collimated.
Would my lack of sharpness be the seeing conditions or something else.
I'm new to telescopes so any info is great
That looks like a screen shot from a mobile app. Look at the aspect ratio. I don't think even Bird has taken a picture of Jupiter with that much detail before.
Could someone please post up a photo of Jupiter not a fancy stacked image just a single shot through something close to a 10" on average viewing is like to see how close I am to other people's seeing
I was out last night about midnight and had a quick look at Jupiter in the 20" at 196x and it was the best I have ever seen the ol' boy! The Red Spot was very clear with festoons of turbulence all around, the bands had clear structures, fainter bands all popping out and 2 moons sitting on either side just outside the planets disc.
Went back about 10 mins later for another look and just crud, jumping all over, waves of heat shimmering through the image could just make out that the GRS was there but that was all.
Seeing can have a lot more to do with the view than anything else and patience with planets is the key.

I was viewing at about 10:30 for 15 mins then clouds came. When constantly following the spot would appear for seconds then vanish and two major bands would have blurred edges. On the 26mm the lines where cleaner. So I'm guessing it's just the seeing conditions. That it maybe it's still down a bit low at that time?
hi guys that is from an app!! Gas Giants (recommended). haha i wish i could take a planetary shot like that. i set the time to when Jemmo had posted his comment to show the exact location of the red spot and moons. my subs were of Thor's Helmet (sorry for any confusion I had also referred to setting up in another thread).
things were clear before the clouds rolled in, but the best time to view is around 1am as it is when the planet is at its highest.
Just got the app. Very hand I flipped the image as if my scope would have been and zoomed out to roughly what I saw and it Looks right although a bit clearer image. I'll attach what I saw with the app. I could only make out two major bands and the dot. Couldn't see Jupiters moon shadow
Here's a still of jupiter which is about what I see through my 120mm refractor with an 8mm Delos eyepiece.
Last Friday, seeing was pretty good and I got much better views, with the thinner bands visible, and the great Red Spot.

I have posted a sketch of Jupiter in the observational and visual astronomy solar system and DSO sketches sticky. It was done with a 130mm telescope.

thanks Luke that's good to go off is that with a filter? I've gotten bit closer and little bit clearer so far with the 10" off my deck so not super dark.

Saw the sketch Ralph great detail. The highest power ep I have is a 9mm plossl I haven't used it with a Barlow as I only have a cheapo Barlow that came with my Nat geographic newtonian. I've used a Barlow with my 12.5 mm cheapo nat geographic ep but I get clearer image with just the 9mm plossl.
Think I should invest in a good Barlow. I have a 2" 26mm wide view ep so can you get a 2" Barlow that I can still use my 1.25" Eps with?
Like the image I wondered about the red spot as well as I can often see the bands although the nights with heat haze in SA have really degraded viewing at times.
