Trifid Nebula

A recent shot of the Trifid Nebula, taken during a near-full moon.

Equipment used: Skywatcher ED120, QHY12, 60mm guider w/ Atik Titan mono camera on AZ-EQ6 GT mount. Orion 0.80x focal reducer and Baader UHC-S filter also used in this shot.

20 x 4min exposures, 50 darks, 50 bias.

Lovely shot and an amazing amount of detail for near full moon. You would get a lot more with no moon.

I would say the UHC-S, if it's anything like the CLS would take out a big chunk of light making the scope slow without the reducer.

Cheers, Raymo. The focal reducer is a fairly recent purchase and I just wanted to try it out. Not knowing in advance that Trifid is a fairly small target, I went ahead and took this shot with it still attached.

I have uploaded a revised version of this image to Astrobin with correct Gamma for displays set to industry standard 1.22 Gamma. The previous image has a higher star count and arguably more detail but at the expense of the field flatness.
