Just saw a huge meteor in Melbourne...

Wow, was driving home tonight and saw a huge meteor streak low in the northern sky. Left a long smoke trail that reminded me of the big Russian one from a few years ago now.

Anyone else notice it?

I'm in SE QLD and around 5pm while taking a look at the clouds ( to see if it may be possible to do some viewing this evening ) i saw a bright light, at first i thought it was a bright star, it got VERY bright for several seconds then slowly dimmed and went away, i dont think it was a plane as after the light went i saw nothing but clear blue sky in that area.

I saw it around 5:40 last night low in the West from Clifton Hill. Very bright and left a trail that stayed at least 15min. was just above the clouds near the horizon in the orange glow.

Hi Doug,

This thread was generated as a joke on you. Your wife was correct. You imagined it There was no meteor.

Okay I will cease being cruel. I believe there was a meteor but I missed it. Probably because I was driving in the wrong direction and that I am in SE Qld.

I become quite envious over these spectacular sights. They are so rare and so short. There's no time to get the camera its gone before you think, Camera! I'll get a shot of .... Damn gone.

I have only seen a few big ones at night. Never in twilight or daylight.

er Doug? Your wife did not put me up to this I just could not resist.

Cheers

I have seen two fire balls here on the sunshine coast, the first was around lunch time some years back, i remember because i was having a pub lunch, it was a bright clear beautiful day and i was sitting outside and saw a long tail of orange flames and white smoke, it was very bright and the flames were very large, in my minds eye i can still remember it as clear as day.

Hi Ian.

SKITE

Next time invite me

I consider you to be fortunate to witness such an event. I would dearly love to witness same.

I believe I am more likely to win lotto if I played every Qld game and I am close to doing that now.

You are fortunate Ian. Its in your memory and no one can take it away. Enjoy.

Cheers

Not that sure of the time. I'll find out as a friend tried to grab a photo of it. We were at the track training at the time.
