The Gum Nebula

A wide diffuse nebula in the southern sky spanning 30 odd degrees across the sky.

6D, 35mm f1.4 Siggy at f2.8, (4x240s, 4x90s, 4x30s), ISO1600, CLS-CCD clip in filter, Astrotrac

That's an epic capture! You should send this to APOD. I've never seen the full extent of that nebulosity in one pic.

Awesome pic This is also one of the closest nebulae. Perhaps from a sufficient distance it might look similar to the HII bubbles seen in the LMC/SMC.

It's about 47x48 deg centered on 08:11:34.699 -39:53:04.234
The star closest to centre is Naos (Zeta Puppis). It contains all of Puppis, Pyxiz, and Vela; and parts of Carina, Columba, Canis Major and Pictor.

Thank you for the feedback all. Might try out the Astronomic clip in Ha filter in the 6D and try for more red nebula details next time I'm out. Weather is getting cooler, and have already noticed a significant drop in dark current noise, so keen to give it a go.

This is an outstanding job. Can you give us more detail regarding the 35mm focal length lens you used?

That's brilliant! I can't really recall seeing the Gum Nebula look so much like a bubble of supernova remnant, feels very three dimensional on a massive scale. Very nicely captured indeed, might well be worth a punt at APOD.

Thanks Andy, Nicola and Octane. Nicola, a Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art was used at f2.8. 4x240s, 4x90s, 4x30s exposures at ISO1600. No darks or flats. An Astronomic CLS-CCD clip in filter (XL-Clip system for full frame cams) was also used.

What a lovely image Troy! There are not so many shots around showing the full extend of the GUM nebular complex and this is one of the most beautiful I have seen

Clear skies
