Canon dslr recommendations needed

Hi all, I have an older 20d that I am looking to upgrade, I am lucky enough to be getting a $500 voucher from my employee so I am am hoping to spend under $1000

I will be using it on a 10 inch dob for now but might get something more suitable in the future.

I have a 50mm lenses and a 18-55 so body only or something with a basic zoom lense might be the way to go... Are there any accessories that are a must?

Thanks Joe

hi joe more than a few people on here love the 1100d canon for astro
depending upon where you live perhaps a light pollution filter, though some also say that it can strip colour

A spare battery.

You can still get a good deal on a 600d, but the 1100d may be all you need.

If you were looking at spending up to 1000 on top of the 500, you could likely get a 60Da, which is optimised for astrophotography, but would
probably have to be ordered, as most retailers don't carry that model
in stock. Otherwise, as others have said, the 1100D would be a good choice.

Your unlikely to get a 60Da carrying a canon warranty for under $2000 if they stock them. Canon discontinued them in Australia more than 18 months ago. However you can get cheaper grey imports of this camera from mail order stores in most of the capital cities in Australia.

Had a quick look while mothers day shopping and spotted a 700d twin lens kit, I was told that it's a slight step up from the 1100/1200d's seems like the way to go plus a second battery and a remote.....

Out of curiosity, how would they stack up to a Ccd of about the same value?

If you were looking to spend money then the 6D would be a much better choice than the 60Da in my opinion - better camera all round with miles of room to grow, and it's full frame.

Cheaper options would be the 600D or 1100D.

The 600D is excellent, and I really like using mine. A spare battery is a must, or the battery grip that takes 2 batteries.
U cajn get these as aftermarket on ebay for around $70 and they work fine.
Also a remote that can set up a series of timed exposures.
I spent $15 on eBay and it works perfectly well. It walks u thru set up of: Number of exposures>Exp Time>Time between Exp> etc. It plugs into the 2.5mm plug on the Canon and has a decent cord length.
This one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LCD-Timer...6690d1e&_uhb=1

U can drill and screw in a couple of hooks into the Dob base to hang the accessories on or glue Velcro to them.
U wont be disappointed with the 600D and I see the sell for about 400 body only. A big plus is that the LCD folds out away from the body and I have found this very useful since u can set it up so you don't have to bend and twist around to see it when u are focusing. It also has a 10x magnification which helps when focusing too.

^^ That reminds me, I also found the RC-6 IR remote quite useful, especially for video and "selfies":

I got a genuine one for $15, whereas the current eBay ones seem to be knock-offs.

I nearly brought a 1200D the other day but pulled out at the last minute, going on specs the 1100D is still probably better or at least just as good.

I think though I would choose the 650D or 600D, probably the 600D purely on price.
For me the cameras are much of a muchness not being seriously into the hardware side of things I figure either one would be good no matter what.
The only thing that is important to me is it must have sensor cleaning.
