G'day,

Not so much a storm chaser or weather freak, but I don't mind the odd early summer southerly buster storm brewing around late Oct, Nov. Love seeing the clouds brewing after a stinking hot Sydney day, (the darker the better!) then watching the lightning come in from the south, the loud deafening, cracking noise of thunder and then the big downpour!

I know it sounds a bit sadistic , but its a great display of mother nature and how powerful it can be.

I am a Severe Storm Spotter/Chaser and have been for quite some time. In our own group and for the Bureau of Meteorology. I dont claim to know anything about forecasting Severe weather events (I keep that for the ones that like to study numbers and charts), but I do read the sky that in most cases I can get to where I need to be to capture a storm or observe a good Funnel, or waterspout etc... My main passion is Lightning photography, with vortex chasing second on the list. In South Australia we have our own group which is a part of the Australian Severe Weather Association Inc. but as a group of people that love the same thing we have become quite good friends with one another and have regular social gatherings, aswell as a good chase when conditions are right.

Norm; not sadistic at all, its what makes it interesting, and the fear of the unknown attracts us

I would call myself a weather freak but not a storm chaser, although chasing has fascinated me ever since I first heard about it, reading a magazine from the US. I also visit the forums at Weatherzone, a pretty good place to learn about weather from not only Australia but from all around the world too.

Once had a small tornado pop up in front of me .. it moved over a small piece of water.. sucked up this big water spout .. then started to
suck up or throw around all sorts of stuff before fadeing out
weirdly even though it was gone the few things it grabbed (a kilo or so each)
kept going UP.

Lightning scares the bejesus out of me as well ..way to close once
convinced me to whenever possible stay clear .

good luck astro i'll stick to hide under the bed when the weather is nasty
