M83 - first light

So here is the first light mages from my remote setup at Coona.

M83 - LRGB 3 hours each. RGB was binned x2. L was unbinned.

Also was Ha added - another 3 hours.

Taken with PW CDK12.5 and STX16803. Processed in PI.

I'm not really satisfied with the processing of these - the Ha is too prominent in the second and the colour is a bit noisy in the LRGB. That said, there is a lot of detail in the Lum. There still plenty of time for more data for this so I may update these.

Larger versions are here:

Comments and criticism welcome

I like the galaxy colour from the second, but the background from the first. I would be interested to see a combination of the two images with the galaxy masked into the other images background.

First one looks good, Pete. A great first light! Not as fussed on the Ha blend.

Cheers,
Rick.

Excellent Pete. Prefer the first one but a blend of the two might work too.

Cheers, Marcus

Hi Pete,
Great first light.
I would tempted to play around with such good data.
I would go for selective contrast in the core.
What are the 3 black vertical lines? -
they look like bleed lines but I don't see what stars they are from.

cheers
Allan

Hi Pete,
I did a bit of reprocessing of your image. (as agreed )

I used Photoshop with blurred masks.
I couldn't use much of the Ha data but I did use some for the galaxy.
I worked on contrast & detail in the core.
I increased star colours with LAB mode & made them smaller with curves -
then blurred them slightly.
I didn't get rid of the vertical black lines - it would take ages to do that.
(Woops - I just saw the bright blue star bottom right overdone - doesn't matter.)
I think I made a slight improvement.
Do you think this looks better?

cheers Allan

A few quibbles over the flat-field accuracy, plus it does look a little soft to me as the blue-yellow binary at 3 o'clock at the edge of the spiral is not that cleanly resolved, but seeing can easily be the culprit there.

That said, perfect guiding and excellent colour balance.

Gotta be happy with that

Thanks Peter - I'd best learn how to do that. Back to the PI tutorials I think

Still learning how to use decon - I suspect that I need some more Lum to get the best out of this target.

Thanks Rick - I took the Ha as the Moon was full but the weather good - it was an interesting experiment.

I was surprised that the guiding was as good as it was. Must have been the excellent camera.

It was a real mixed bag of subs - I just processed everything so there are bound to be odd flat fielding and soft focus.

You clearly did Allan - that is much improved. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

For years I have been caught between what I believed to be average data and average processing skills. This new set up and location has taken care of the first - so its time to work on the processing.

Thanks Pete,
You certainly have great data & few tweaks with processing could make such a difference.
Most of what I know in Photoshop comes from Louie's videos here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ5...Ge66vsuSaXb-0A

I of course modified procedures & used different filters etc but
the basic principles are the same.
In this case - masks allowed me to work on the core.

cheers
Allan

Very good first light Pete, few things to improve as others pointed out but none the less a promising result, you must be quite satisfied
