Saturn Moon Video

Hi Guys,

We were lucky to have fairly good seeing conditions in Perth, with only scattered high clouds. So I got out my trusty old C8 and attached a 5D2 running Magic Lattern raw video firmware.

Details : Celestron C8, f/10, prime focus. Canon 5D2, running Magic Lantern RAW video firmware in 3x crop mode @ 1880 x 1056 resolution. 1/60 sec exposure, ISO 200, 10 fps.

nice results there - how were you able to bring up the levels for Saturn and keep some details of the lunar surface?

I think it's mainly a result of the 14 bit raw video. I didn't do much in post, just some minor levels adjustment and white balance. We had a darker sky in Perth, which helped the contrast.

thanks for letting us know - so what time did it happen for you? it started at 10:04am for us and was over not long after 11 - was fully clouded for that

Ingress was around 6 am, right on sunrise, with moon overhead. So almost perfect for a daytime conjunction. I should have waited for egress, but was too tired after stuffing around with cameras/firmware most of the night. The raw video is still in alpha and I battled to find a version that worked correctly. Good ol' last minute preparation!

I also watched from Perth but missed seeing the final moment when it disappeared due to cloud cover. But I did see it re-emerge.

That's such an incredible capture, Colin. I kept watching it over and over again.

While I'm here, many congratulations on this making it to the NBC news page! Especially as it's amongst some truly amazing images taken by NASA. You must be over the moon with excitement

Hi Mark, they sure did! Our very own Rob Kauffman nabbed it and as far as Rob & I aware of, it seems to be the only shot of it re-emerging.
He had poor weather to deal with but is still an awesome shot all the same isn't it. Very special indeedy.
