Milky Way, 350D, from June

Ok, so now the continuation with images from an ASWA viewing night in June, in some light pollution this time in the outer suburbs of Perth (as compared to my previous post, where the images were taken at a dark site).

I learned an awful lot about removing light pollution from wide field photographs while processing these images. I've learned it's quite a different game with digital shots vs the old film ones, with more room to move in the processing.

As a result of learning lots, the first couple of the set are pretty ordinary, with the light pollution quite evident especially as halo's around the foreground objects (gives you an idea of the original image before processing), and the last one or 2 of the set are pretty good with the last one showing almost no light pollution at all. I'm quite happy with the last one, the second last is OK but needs more exposure time to bring out the detail of the Reo Ophiuchus area around Antares.

The first two are 2 minute exposures, the last two are 5 minute exposures.

Enjoy!

See all the new ones from this batch here:

Indeed, better than nothing and I can't complain without a better suggestion, but yes, you have to pick your nights carefully to not have problems with sand.

Hi Roger,

Nice work on the processing.

You talk about "various techniques" to remove the LP. Have you tried gradient removal software such as Gradient Exterminator or ABE?

Cheers

Itchy,

I haven't actually, I should try them. The best method I found for these was to adjust the image reasonably well, then duplicate, gaussian blur, tweek the gradients for trees etc (fill inthe gaps), remove about 20% brightness then subtract that from the original image. I found that was extremely effective.

Roger,

ABE is free Command prompt program and there is a little front end program that works really well. It does all of that fiddlely stuff in a few seconds.
