NGC 1232 and 1232B

http://www.astrobin.com/70722/

I took this one over last weekend. This is an interesting galaxy pair. They look as if they are associated, but in fact this is a nice example of one of Halton Arp's discordant redshifts. NGC1232B has a recessional velocity of about 5000km/s greater than NGC 1232, which, according to current theory and my calculations makes NGC1232B 200 million light years further away than NGC 1232.

Have a look at the pic of the same galaxy I posted in 2008

Some improvement is evident.

Telescope: 12.5" PlaneWaveCDK
Mount: AP900
Camera: QSI540wsg
Exposure: 5.3 hours, more or less equally distributed between LRGB

That's a nice NGC 1232, Geoff!

Did you invert and look for the Sidonio jet? Perhaps you could pool your data with Mike and Greg Bradley to see what a bigger stretch might reveal?

Cheers,
Rick.

Needs an extreme stretch as well as inversion to look for those faint jets!

Thanks for all the comments. Interesting about looking for the jet. I'm in the middle of a birthday party, so I'll work on it tomorrow.

Massive improvement in those two images and essentially with the same equipment. Well done and a beautiful image.

A beautiful image Geoff. 1232B if it were close to 1232 would have distorted that perfect spiral as further evidence it is not close by.

Hi Rick. I tried inverting and stretching, but nothing that could be seen without averted imagination. However, a contour plot on the inversion does seem to show some indications.

Oh and... I'm definitely not crazy

This is a great shot of this galaxy Geoff, well done...even if it only shows a slight hint of the Sidonio Jet One minor comment, to my eye it looks perhaps a tad Yellow and Blue but even so, it is quite appealing
