Maybe now we'll get an update to Starry Night. The press release:

SkySafari Acquired by Simulation Curriculum Corp. of Minneapolis Purchase includes apps, accessories, key personnel.
Minneapolis, MN, December 20th, 2013

Simulation Curriculum Corp. of Minnetonka, MN is pleased to announce the acquisition of San Francisco based SkySafari, developers of iOS, Mac OS X, and Android applications; and of its SkyFi, and SkyWire hardware product lines. Simulation Curriculum publishes the Starry Night and Layered Earth lines of consumer and curriculum based software. The acquisition also includes SkySafari developers Tim DeBenedictis and Bill Tschumy, who will join Simulation Curriculum, and continue to support and develop existing and new products under Simulation Curriculum.

By combining resources, Simulation Curriculum and the SkySafari teams will now be leading the industry into innovative new areas of mobile and desktop astronomy and earth science software development.

The first new product to be released under the combined company will be SkySafari 4, the flagship mobile astronomy app. SkySafari 4 represents a complete overhaul of Southern Stars' award-winning product line for iOS 7, and is available on the iTunes Store now. Plans call for release of SkySafari 4 at an introductory 50% discount through January 20th, 2013.

Simulation Curriculum co-founder and CEO Michael Goodman writes, "SkySafari and Starry Night are the two most well-known and highly regarded astronomy software applications on the market today. This combination of the best products and the brightest talent will allow the company to continue to exceed its customer's expectations while creating new products intended for new consumer and education audiences, the latest platforms and the most popular devices."

SkySafari founder Tim DeBenedictis writes, "SkySafari and Starry Night are the two strongest brands in astronomy software today. Joining our teams and finding common efficiencies will lead both companies to develop new products that neither could have imagined alone."

As far as i'm aware, Simulation Curriculum Corp do not have apps available to end users. At least this was the case for Starry Night, they might have had apps for their other products.

I am guessing to keep up with user expectations they either had to develop their own apps or buy into existing products. I think Starry Night is great software, as is SkySafari. Get the best features from both and we could see a worthy update to their planetarium package.

It would be good if some of the features reserved for SN Pro software now filter down to the SN Enthusiast.
