Aurora Fail
Last night's aurora chase was a fail.

I travelled to the south eastern tip of Australia.

But, I did manage to discover new territory and took a bunch of images as I waited for any alerts to come through that the light show had started.

This was taken 1 hour and 45 minutes before the 3rd quarter Moon had set.

All alone on a remote beach, under the stars.

Canon EOS-5D Mark III, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
30s f/4.0 at 17.0mm iso3200

It's a great photo anyway, you captured the scene beautifully.
Also Nova Centauri is just visible as well.

There was a lot of thought put behind the composition. I spent about 30 minutes figuring it out.

I will show you all once again, the next time there is an event, why I've chosen what I have.

Yes, a big shame about the aurora no show H but great image regardless. There were a lot of very tired and disappointed aurora chasers on Friday. Well done for taking a punt and making the trip. Did you find you had any problems with the lights from the off shore rigs in that area of the state. It's one thing I noticed the last time I was in that area.

I didn't have any problems with lights on the horizon. They appeared as just dots in 30 second exposures. While I would much prefer that they weren't there, I can live with them. If required, I'll clone them out.

It's been pretty dead insofar as aurorae is concerned lately. *sigh*

A sunspot that has just come around the limb of the sun has had 5 M-class flares in the last 24 hours. Here's hoping it's still spewing when in a geoeffective position.
