As seen in Aldi's Salisbury store (Brisbane)...

Hi all!!

This picture was sent to me by a friend.... it looks like it would be a perfect scope to check your shoes or view the planet Earth!!

Cheers,
Mario

PS For those that have missed the obvious, the scope is pointing the wrong way!!!

Maybe they could read - don't point it a the sun, so they point it downwards, pretty smart I think

I've seen this so many times in stores like Cash Converters and even in movies.
I guess people think the eyepiece is always at the bottom of a telescope so it is looking up!

One side benefit, dust won't settle on the primary.... tho it is bad news for the secondary

Ever seen telescopes in an Australian Geographic shop? There must be some rule that all reflectors must point earthward

It never fails

Aldi is a grocer. Australian geographic seems to present itself as a store promoting science. They usually have many telescopes as well.

Surely they can do better

Was speaking to Ron Gibson about these the other day.

Said a customer came in with one recently wanting a better finderscope for it.

The customer got all irate when the cheapest finderscope cost more than the scope!

I retorted I bet the finderscope is 200% better quality and could see more than the scope too!

You have all missed it!!!

The brand needs to be up the correct way to be read. I think it is called 'facing', it is retail logic.

The price (!) placard before & advertising poster behind the scope refer to it as a 'Dobson telescope'.

I've never heard of a Dobsonian being called anything but that & 'Dobbie' (even though the eponymous naming is accurate).

Anyone else?!

Yeah I saw it in my local Aldi as well, at $49.99 a bargain as it's the same one Ozscopes is selling for $90 ( a supposed discount form the regular price).

These are OK if you use a better quality eyepiece.
That, plus a better eyepiece may just get a young one interested.

I told my sister to buy one for her son. he's only 5, so I hope he can manage this easier then say a cheap 50/300 refractor that she was going to buy (with diagonals and barlows etc) would make it confusing for him I said. least I can chuck in some eyepiece doubles that I have as well.

if he stays interested in a few years I'll fork out for a 6" dob for him.

Absolutely!
When I started out I had a 50mm Tasco refractor and while this was limited in what it could do I was never aware of this I just revelled in having a telescope and being an astronomer. BUT my father was the catalyst (he was not into astronomy but knew a bit from his father) he gave me heaps of encouragement through library books and watching Patrick Moore - the Sky at Night. As I got older my interest went elsewhere in to guitar but in my mid 20s I rediscovered my love of this hobby. Matt you can be the person who makes that difference in your nephews future interest in this incredible hobby.
And we certainly need budding young astronomers.
There is nothing wrong with this telescope for a youngster to start out, the 3 words are encouragement, encouragement, encouragement.
Good onya!

I still have a 50mm Meade/Tasco/Toya refractorstashed away for when Miss 5 really shows an interest. She already asks to look through Daddy's when he's aligning for the night. She was given my old binos, and the 50mm is waiting (trying to find an original mount in the meantime - saw one at St. Vinnies the other day but beyond help unfortunately).

thanks Peter,
I didn't have to encourage him thankfully. I think when he come up for a visit and saw Saturn through the 10" dob blew his mind. when Santa asked him the other day at the shops what he would like, he said a telescope so he can be like uncle Matt.

unfortunately my sis doesn't want to spend a fortune, understandably, but I can help him with this little scope at least, even if it lets him see the moon all by himself will be a start down a marvellous expedition into the universe.

thanks for your input Peter, greatly appreciated.

matt
