Hanimar 400mm lens to Canon mount?

Older guy in our Astronomy Group has lent me this lens, it looks a beauty, but need an attachment to connect to my Canon mount.
Have googled a bit but no luck.
Its a Hanimar lens 400mm , f 6.3, and the end bit is quite small compared to my 450 mount??
Anyone point me in the right direction so I can attach to my camera?

Might have a bit of trouble with this one, Liz. If it's a M42 connection, you'll need a M42 to EF adapter. Otherwise, you'll be out of luck.

Liz, can you take a photo of the end of the lens that connects to the camera, we should be able to tell you what adapter to get from that.

Hi Liz

I think that the Hanimar 400mm F6.3 was part of the Hanimex brand and I suspect it would have been an M42 screw fitting, known as the “Pentax screw mount”.

I used to have a Hanimar 135mm F3.5 and it was quite soft and had noticeable chromatic aberration. I think that in their days, these were a budget range of lenses so I would not expect great performance from the lens.

Some of these older lenses do not have an automatic diaphragm (aperture) and needed to be manually stopped down, making the viewfinder dim. There may be some limitations on using these older lenses even if you were able to find a suitable adapter.

Cheers

Dennis

Hi there Liz,

The Hanimar lenses do have an M42 fitting, and an M42 to EOS adaptor is just a few dollars. Have a look here . It might be worth making absolutely sure that it will work on your EOS 450, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't. For less than $6 inc postage, it's worth the gamble, but just don't expect too much.

Hanimar 400mm lens

Hi Liz,

I have owned one of these lenses for many years - not by any means a class lens. It is actually currently fitted wit a T mount to M42 adapter. This can be unscrewed and replaced with a T mount to EOS adapter. Look on Ebay under T2 T mount to EOS adapter. There are quite a number for around $5 to $7 au including postage.

Len

Thank you Len and Leon ... this is an old post, and have returned the lens to the owner.
