Five Favourite Nebulae
What are your Five Favourite Nebulae? (not PN)
Here are 86 NGC nebulae images to help you decide.
https://picasaweb.google.com/1100488...46/NGCNebulae#
You can also choose LMC and SMC nebulae. (e.g. N346, N2070)

Hi Glen,
The smoke is still hovering around and more noticeable in the daytime.
Depending on the wind direction, it can sometimes clear here at night.

In the EP, for pure visual viewing pleasure:
Eta Carina
Orion
Lagoon
Tarantula
Omega
But I have a different list based on my own sentimental history, my adventures with imaging, and some of the iconic images around:
Eagle/Pillars of Creation - mine and Hubble's best shot ;-)
NGC 6559 - the amazing - yet unnamed - mixture of emission, reflection and dark nebulosity in Sagittarius
Eta Carina - I successfully imaged this with my dad's SLR, my 5" Newt, and a lot of luck in 1987 :-)
Omega - the colour variety in this is amazing. Comes out in AP, but also I find this the nebula that gives most different responses to filters in the EP
Trifid - I saw one of those "artists impression" paintings of this when I was a kid and it absolutely blew me away. I love observing it now just to see with my own eyes what made such an impression all those years ago.
Cheers
Jonathan

Just back from Bretti and Orion and Tarantula were spectacular through my 16" dob, so I would agree with Jon's selections. Through the DGM NPB Neb filter they are fantastic.

NGC 2070 Tarantula - saw it from Minnie Water and am very grateful to be living in the Southern hemisphere.
M42 - the first light in my telescope.
M17 - The Swan, clear and crisp at Astrofest.
Eta Carina - my designated target for school nights with a DGM NPB filter - plenty of "Wows" from students and parents.
M20 - another Astrofest specialty.

Please add your five favourites to the OC, GC and PN threads, if you have not done so.
Thanks Glen

The Veil is my favorite nebula as you know Glen! Seeing it in the dark skies of Roseneath took my breath away - still does when I think of it....

In no particular order:-
NGC 2070 (Tarantula)
M42 (Orion Nebula)
M20 (Triffid)
NGC 1977 (the Running Man)
NGC 2359 (Thor's Helmut)
My choices are a bit different to some other peoples' choices but these are 5 target's I find aesthetically pleasing.
Cheers,
John B

Eta Carina (NGC 3372) observed through a 12" binocular telescope is probably my single most memorable observing experience. However it's a target that "everyone" will include in their top 5 so I just went for a couple of targets outside the box.
Cheers,
John B

Hi Glen.
My 5 most favourite are:
Orion M42
Lagoon M8
Swan M17
Eagle M16
Eta carina Ngc 3372 near Ngc 3532, an incredible open cluster, which I could have easily included in fav open clusters. In a 12" dob these two are a sight, and always get wows from friends and family.
Cheers bigjoe.
