M8 Lagoon Nebula

This is the first image from my dark site visit last weekend (first time with my gear).

I wanted to keep things simple for the trip, so I had just one setup only - FF, no FR, so this is the core part of the Lagoon nebula only.

4 x 300sec subs, 20 flats/dark flats and 20 darks, ISO400.

I'm quite happy with the results, particularly as it's the first time I managed 300sec exposures. I'll link a bigger picture sometime later.

EDIT: Link to my Google+ post with larger pic: https://plus.google.com/117947786043...ts/S9bK3N1kiKa <-- This is the reprocessed version (see messages below)

It's certainly better than my previous one -> http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=111738

Really nice shot Chris, good detail in the nebula and some good colours in the stars.

Nice dark spot by the looks of it something I need to find also

Thanks everyone.

I was at Girraween National Park for the long weekend and it's very dark. I obviously could see a lot of the Milky Way with the naked eye, etc. What impressed me was the change in the sky when the Milky Way set. It's been a long time since I've seen such a sight.

I'm also quite impressed with the camera and using ISO400 - that really helps with the colour.

Hah, yeah.

I was using the QHY5L-II for guiding not the ST-i in my sig. I found it pretty good overall, but I suspect the ST-i might be slightly better. The ST-i wins hands-down for convenience for taking darks though.

The biggest win for the trip though was with Astrotortilla - it was just great in sorting out the polar alignment and syncing/plate-solving.

The biggest loser though was Windows 8 on my new laptop. It did not play nice with the USB attachments when it was running on battery power. It was forever disconnecting the camera at inopportune times - fortunately each time was when it was about to start an image grab, not part way through. But this was quite painful when dealing with AT's polar alignment checker (it takes 2 pics to work out the error) - and Win8 did frequent stuff ups on the 2 pic, making the process fail. A big time waste that I have to sort out. It also made taking flats/dark flats difficult as it would die part way through. Fortunately I had my old Win7 netbook with me as well, so I hooked it up for those. As the netbook doesn't have the grunt for AT, I had to persist with Win8 and curse when it failed. Maybe someone knows about this type of problem. I'll create an appropriate post for it I think.

Thanks Jon.

I did some more clean up, mostly refined the black and mid levels.

Nice image there Chris

Stars are great and nice colours.

Have you tried the 6D at ISO 800?

Well done

Hey Rod, thanks.

Yes, you might stumble across one of my other images here - NGC235: http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=113081

I tend to use ISO800 for around 1-2 min, ISO 1600 for the 30 to 60 sec. Anything more and the brighter stars can get a bit too bloated for my liking. So, I went to ISO 400 for over 2 min (well, really 5 min+ - I'm not going to bother with anything between 2 & 5 I think. Just like I'll jump from 5 to 10 min).
