Online location finder.

Does anyone have a link to a site that will allow me to put in Longitude and Latitude and find out what is at that location. It needs to be fairly accurate. I'm trying to find the name of the island in the South Atlantic off Argentina (north northeast of the Faulklands). The co-ordinates are 45 deg 19 min south, 55 deg 16 min west (approx)

Using Lat & Long grid.
Nothing there but ocean ?

I just had to have a look in Google Earth... it doesn't show an island there but the depth of the ocean gets to 0ft!!!

I haven't come across anything that does what you want (that doesn't mean it doesn't exist though!). I have spent some time surfing some excellent mapping sites, so I checked my favourites and I'm a bit puzzled cause I don't have them in my favourites... maybe I have them at work?

If you could find a map with the name on it would that do?

I think the University of Texas has some excellent mapping resources online. The other site I've had in mind that is pretty impressive is something to do with the JPL/NASA - they have MrSID format maps (actually satellite images) down to very good resolution (I found my house!) - but I don't think there are any names on the map/images .

It's a curly one... I've tried a few searches without any luck, and no doubt so have you!

'scuse me while I beat my head against the floor.

We were looking through the atlas tonight and I spotted this point off S. America that showed 6681 meters, and couldn't for the life of me think of any island there with a mountain that high, especially as it was right on the edge of the Argentine Abyssal Plain. I checked other pages and it still only showed the meterage. Checked Google Earth and World Wind and Encarte Atlas ....nothing. So it had me revved up to find out what it was.

I've just rechecked the map and re-read the legends and codes etc the spot marks the deepest point in the abyssal plain

Wonder if there is a nice rock around here for me to crawl under

That's OK Paul! I know how it feels!

I had to go back to Google again... here's what I found at that location... The cursor was on the left hand peak of th two bumps in the ocean, and notice the elevation shows 0 ft... all around it is -ve. Not exactly the same coords, but very close...

well my atlas shows an island . maybe its a ghost island ..and it be full of pirates ..arrrr..arr

There are a couple of sea mounts close by , but as Paul has said the mesurement is for depth

Yes, it was the sea mounts that threw me off. You can see them in Al's Google Earth image, but they never break the surface.

The legendary floating island of Owa Tabu Byam ..... home of the lost Inca treasures: rubies, emeralds, gold .... also home to a race of people with wet feet, and very VERY long legs! (about 6680 metres or so)
