SMC Mosaic update.

Hi,

Didn't expect to image last night, supposed to be cloudy but turned out to be a clear night.

So I have 3 more panels, a total of 7 so far.
As stated before, 5 minute subs, ISO 1600 a total of 1 hour per panel will be used on the final image.

Again this image is composed of single 5 minute subs for reference, I've done some processing. I'm excited about the potential of the final image, it's already becoming a monster to process, even with single subs.

Hope I don't run out of computing power on this.

Cheers,

Justin.

That's looking truly spectacular. I hope you'll offer it as an A1 or A0 sized poster when you're done. I think it'll be a real keeper.

Cheers,
Cam

Thanks Ian!

I'd have to say I probably wouldn't attempt it if I wasn't using ICE to stitch it together.

Cheers,

Justin.

Massive area Justin. Not an easy feat to take care of panels distortion with extended mosaics. Looks good.

Yep, distortion is the one thing that I'm afraid of!
So far so good though.

Cheers,

Justin.

You won't have the issue over the area you're stitching because the sky curvature over the whole FOV is minimal. With much larger mosaics you usually have to make a scaffold then match the individual subs onto it. There is a tool in PixInsight to generate an artificial starfield that you can use as a base for very large mosaics such as big chunks of the milkyway. Or you can get an existing widefield of the area then up sample it to much the image scale of your subs and do it this way.

Nice to know, good to have your input.

Justin,

Looks great and I love the actual visual comparison you get of the two globulars 47 Tucanae and NGC 362 compared to the SMC. that is the sort of stuff that got me into astronomy as a teenager when I realised how large some deep sky objects were.

Yep a great region of sky.
Can't wait to see some close ups from your 16" of some SMC objects.

Cheers,

Justin.
