IC5105 - an experiment

Hi to all

A colleague from the UK asked me to image this small galaxy in Microscopium because it's one of that class of elliptical galaxies with faint outer shells. I did it the other night under not very good conditions with lots of high cloud and I gave up after 150 minutes because the cloud got too bad. In any case this image seems to show some concentric structure. I couldn't find an image on the web with which to compare it though. Can anyone point me to a link?

My image is a full resolution crop.

Cheers

Steve

Pretty cool Steve! The far reaches of the shell are starting to come through. It looks at though it could do with quadruple the exposure time. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jase. Don't know when I'll be able to get back to it.

NED has a few links to images - probably not as good as yours though.

Nice one Steve, I think I can see some shells there. Maybe it's a merger where the cores have only just recently settled in the centre - there doesn't seem to be any intruder galaxies nearby.

Thanks Rolf. As far as I know the shells aren't caused by intruder galaxies. In fact I don't think anyone is 100% sure what causes them. By all means someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Thanks Ray. I forgot about NED. Basically there's nothing deep enough there though. According to my UK colleague no one has ever done a deep shot of this one before.

That's an interesting looking galaxy, Steve. I'd like to see a longer exposure when you get a chance too!

Thanks Rick and Ross. Looks like more data will have to wait until the moon goes away. Apart from the discovery plates apparently no one has ever imaged this one before.
