Aug 24th Saturn SED's in good seeing + Jupiter

Hi All,

Imaged Saturn last night in good seeing, the best I have had since April. Have resolved what I believe is a SED's related bright spot at approx +46.6 L3 25.4 and a large cloud feature in the NEB at approx +31.2 L3 347.7.

The SEB cloud feature is best seen in the R channel animation, it is on the Northern edge of the NEB and moves from the CM toward the preceding limb, the bright SED's related feature is obvious. The polar hex is very well resolved.

Was up early this morning to image Jupiter at approx 20 degrees alt, have the GRS and some nice festoons along the Southern edge of the NEB impinging into the EZ. In the animation Ganymede is swinging in behind the planet.

The seeing was poor, lots of flag waving happening but the final results were encouraging, even if only in IR.

Thanks for looking
Regards
Trevor

Super images Trevor especially the Jupiter shots at only 20 degrees showing detail on Ganymede at such a low alt in ordinary seeing is most impressive!. You must be excited by what these cmos cams are producing.

Glad you got some decent seeing Trevor. That really looks like a large cloud feature.

Also nice to be seeing some early Jupiter.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks very much Ray, reckon that hole saved my sanity, I put in maximum effort for that period. Still feeling the effects although have dispensed with the match sticks holding my eyes open.

Thanks very much Ivan, the large cloud feature is certainly quite subtle, the animation is the key to defining it.

Thanks very much Stuart, the new camera is performing well, looking forward to what it will do with Jup in good seeing. My data here is at the native F/L of my current setup but I did have a play with resampling and even this data, which is only normal single runs not multiple derotated data sets, stood up to 150% resampling very well indeed.

Saturn, while spectacular on any day of the week doesn't really interest me this time, however Trevor, that detail you got on Ganymede is nothing short of amazing

Thanks very much Dave, was rather pleased with the Jup result, Ganymede certainly was an unexpected bonus. Dave, there is so much of scientific significance happening on Saturn, there are several professional teams that I am working with researching different aspects of the features in this data. One of those groups will be presenting a paper in a little over a week at the 2013 EPSC (European Planetary Science Congress) at University College London, I am a co-author. We submitted our abstract several weeks ago but are still working on a poster, this data which tops off nicely my 2013 polar hexagon research project will be included in it.
