Spectroscope MkII - First Light!!

Managed to complete the new spectroscope at the weekend; got first light with a solar spectrum. I used a 50mm Oly lens and a 40mm eyepiece. The Mg and the sodium lines easily split. I will post photos later.

Reference light source

Guys,
Tried to upload a couple of photos at the weekend with no success; will try again later.
I found that the "energy saving" fluoro bulbs make EXCELLENT reference light sources for calibration of the spectral lines. They appear to emit a beautiful range of lines from the violet thru to the far red.( Neon) Great stuff.

Just finishing the T-ring adaptors to mount it on the scope. Also need to modify the camera attachment to focus the MX7c ( need to find 3mm!!??) Has come in at a finished weight of 1950gms all up including the camera, not too bad.

Reference spectrum

Finally got the whole unit to focus with the Starlight MX7c and connect to the scope.
Used the Orsam bulb for trials and got some amazing results!!!! Need to convert the shots to BMP and upload. Certainly MUCH better than the original WPO; much easier to use and get outcome.

Spectra photo

The reference spectra for the Osram lamp, uncleaned and still needs to be analysed. So far so good.

Cool!!!

Does it matter that the spectral lines are not vertical in the image? I assume this is just a camera rotation adjustment required?

Looks good!

You're right. The camera axis wasn't 100% aligned with the grating; also my slit was n't 100% aligned. That's what you learn when you try to calibrate a "reference" source.
I've since managed to get the slit and camera fixed.... look forward to the next results. BTW it took some 12 images with the MX7c to record the whole length of the spectrum with a 1200 line per mm grating.

managed last night to get a profile which allows calibration of pixel to angstom wavelength. Using a couple of the Mercury lines found I was getting abour 0.4 A/ pixel ( pretty good)
When this is done you can then measure other lines in the spectra etc.

Calibrated spectra

Here's a shot of the calibration around 5800 A for the Osram lamp.
