Getting your first job

As some of you may know that I graduated at the end of the year doing a Bachelor of Business (Business Information Systems). I am basically looking for any job in the IT field.

Just wanted to ask if anyone here was in the same boat or has experienced something similar?

I tend to feel the "market" is FLOODED with IT specialists, and so many to choose from. It seems to a LOT of IT is being out-sourced, with Indian web page development being SO SO SO cheap compared to what Aussies charge (I have a website hosted out of Israel, and the whole enchilada including email, cpanel, domain, sub domains etc all cost me $45 a YEAR)

The real boon is medical at the moment. I have never been unemployed for more than 2 days in my line of work. And the demand is increasing ever more.

Hi Stefan,

I understand your problem. The problem though is "Good" IT people are a dime a dozen, "Great" IT people are in short supply.

It is all about trying convey how great you could be for a prospective employer and what value you can bring to their business.

What areas of IT are you great at? What sort of career are you looking for?

Hi Stefan

The reality is that most businesses are doing it pretty tough right now. You'll have heard it before, but you have to keep applying and trying to get interviews best you can. Perhaps even request work experience spots for periods to boost skills or take lesser jobs while waiting on a "Dream" position.

Its been drummed into me to trust instincts at interviews. Its very helpful to get someone with good marks and qualifications, but the tough part is identifying new employees with a drive to learn and attitude to take on any problem. You can teach those sorts of people to do nearly anything.

Its tough getting your foot in the door though. Hope you get given a chance soon.

Sorry in advanced for asking the obvious question but do you have a well structured Resume?

One thing to note is that 90% of jobs are not advertised, not sure if this is applicable to the IT market but it might pay to do some research on companies you might like to work for and start handing around your resume.

Well, there are two areas that are over subscribed with candidates.

For web dev, you are going to need a body of work to attract potential employers, not just a resume. They want to see what you can do, and not just about creating pretty sites. They will want to see that you can take business requirements and develop a conceptual, logical and physical plan to complete the project. They want to see integration with DBs and other apps systems. It is pretty easy these days to stand up a LAMP stack and build something to showcase your work and ability.

Helpdesk, don't worry about it, it is all going to India, unless you want to work for $15 per day. Canvas your local IT integrators, these are the guys who build solutions for businesses, not your corner PC shop. A lot of the smaller shops (10-15 person companies) don't actively advertise for tech staff, but are on the lookout for talent that can learn and adapt.

As they say, start at the bottom and work your way up and one day you could be doing this sort of stuff http://www.cso.com.au/article/461741...tter_security/

That's where I started, at the bottom, Dick Smith Electronics selling PCs
