Starless SNRs

Now my flexure problems have been reduced I hope to use the Astrodon Continuum filter to remove stars from mosaics of faint SNRs.

The first two pictures below show about a quarter of RCW114 with and without stars. I used StarTools to remove the stars.

Here is a large image of the Vela SNR in NII and OIII done the same way. 9MB

As you can see the really faint stuff is far clearer without the star clutter. It will also be easier to add to RGB data.

If you are wondering where RCW114 is, below is a four panel mosaic made by DVJ some time ago superimposed on a star map of Scorpio.

great idea Bert. getting the stars out of the way certainly adds an extra dimension to the capability of your system as a very sensitive tool for imaging faint extended targets. Have you tried calibrating the system to see how far down in surface brightness it can go? Do you anticipate that the continuum filter method will do a better job of star removal. regards ray

The Astrodon Red Continuum filter will remove stars and associated haloes far better than any software.

My system is very fast and I have not hit any limit yet. It is a matter of how stable it all is for long exposures. My whole aim was to have a very fast F3 system with a very low noise sensitive camera and 3nm NB filters.

Ultimately it is always about signal to noise. This is the only dogma in science!

If the weather clears I will do many one hour exposures with the 3nm NB filters and see what pops out. One hour at F3 is equivalent to 2.7 hours at F5 in number of photons collected. The thermal noise is a factor of 2.7 less with the shorter exposures.

Great looking photos Bert.

The lack of stars really brings out the detail.

Ross.
