Wow, thanks for the heads up Narayan. I'm glad no one was hurt, but it's exciting none the less. I hope they find some remnants of it.

Whooee! Imagine something like that landing in the middle of a populated area. Then again don't, it doesn't bear thinking about.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of the investigations.

Thanks for the link, Scott.

I could say it was visitors from outer space trying to get in on the soccer but that wouldn't be right would it? However the fact that that bloke got a happy snap of its entry gives hope for the end result of the location of the hunk of meteorite, that would be good to see.

Why is it that these things always seem to happen in sparsely populated areas?

Maybe this guy was hoping for a hole in one

Great story, would be awesome to have been within seeing distance of the meteor hitting the ground.

The loud explosion sound and seismic detection can be easily explained by a sonic boom from the bolide. A meteorite wouldnt make an explosion sound neccassarily, as it hit the earth, if large enough it would create a sonic boom first anyway. It could of disintegrated at an altitude 40 - 70 klm above the earth and still seem close.
I would like to see more impact details too, be surprised if they come, pretty rare thing really.

There's been surprisingly little coverage of it since the initial flurry. I wonder if it was just a fizzer?

That impact photo looks pretty weak to me.

Mike, there is very strong doubt indeed that this image is an impact site, looks more like a common fractured rock slide/fall - its scary when the media gets hold of these stories! ever since I have got into astronomy and now know some of the basics, I have lost a lot of respect for the media when I see how often they get stuff wrong - makes you wonder about all the other stuff they report on!

heres another very recent bolide over northern europe (i think it is bolide season around now for the world) - I would give my left .. um .. eyebrow for a shot like this

I am pretty confident that is authentic Mike, here's one of my favourite ever of this type of scene - taken from New Zealand 1999
