Has anyone been observing at Lake Maroon, QLD?

Hi guys,

I'm planning on heading out to Lake Maroon this week, and wanted to know if anyone has been there before? I've found a map that shows some public areas, but I'm a bit concerned that like many dams, the whole area will be locked up at night. Anyone know if this is the case?

Cheers,

Jarrod.

Hi Jarrod,

I know this is a little late but I have done astrophotography at Lake Maroon once before recently. The boat ramp is probably the clearest part that we could find but a lot of late night fisherman do use the spot and we quickly got sick of their lights and retreated to another spot but it isn't the best for observing. There is a fair amount of trees around the water (which was great for photography) and the water is quite high near the boat ramp and obviously on an angle that could be potentially hazardous for the scope! And there was lights across the water that were a bit annoying too.

It's definitely a nice spot though and we chose it to avoid facing too much light pollution from Brisbane in the direction of the Milky Way. But yeah, probably not the best place observing wise. You could try Lake Somerset, there is the day area and it's nice and flat. The only problem is they close the gates on weekends and public holidays and it's a trek back to the carpark! But usually the Milky Way rises between two mountains but there is still the light pollution in the East.

Hope this helps

I know a few people who regularly go to Lake Moogerah camp grounds for observing. It's well equipped with ammenties, BBQ facilites etc. That's my next observing destination!

Can vouch for Moogerah although we always go to a different section that has no facilities Still a nice spot to observe though For south/south westerly aspect mainly (or at least from where we observe)
