NGC3324 first reall image from GSO 10"RC

Had a hole in the cloud last night and did six 10min Ha images of NGC3324 and a bit of the surrounding sky, up near Eta Corina. This is the first real image that I have got out of this telescope. Camera is an STL-11000 the image is slightly cropped for composition. It does include the full bottom LH corner. I was happy with the result as it shows promise of things to come.

x6 10min Ha
GSO RC10"
Losmandy G11
SBIG TL-11000 camera
TS2.5 Flat flattener
No flat fielding (not needed on Ha as sky background was very low)

Looks pretty good, Dave! I can tell you that a RC10 without a flattener performs quite badly at the edges of a full frame sensor. I've tried it

Absolutely beautiful Dave. The amount of detail and sharpness is amazing. I was considering the AT2FF for my RC8 but seeing how the TS2.5 performs, might have to jump ships. Any particular reason why you didn't go for the AT2FF? Was it's field diameter too small?

Thanks for your comments. The reason for going to the TS2.5Flat from Teleskop-express in germany was for me two fold. Firstly as you pointed out I was worried about the clear apature of the smaller flattener this being 2.5" I felt was better. Second was that I got a specially made VERY low profile 2.5" focuser from Ron at Moonlite www.focuser.com, I needed this focuser to be low so I could pull focus. The standard height Moonlite focuser will not focus with this flattener (needs 11mm more infocus), Ron made one from a few different parts, same cost, no extra machining needed. This focuser has a M68 threaded top used to screw in things in like 2", 1 1/4", STL, T adapters but it is also the same thread that the TS2.5Flat has on it's telescope facing end! Then they made another adaptor from the M69 thread on the other end of the flattener to STL thread for my camera. So I have a fully threaded solution with perfect spacing. So far I'm very happy with the flattener. I now just have to solve a issue with the ~3" baffle tube on the primary mirror not being long enough causing light spill directly onto the chip. This makes it almost impossible to flat field correctly and causes a few internal reflections as well. Early days :-)

Yes, I agree! It's such an interesting and surprisingly under imaged nebula, it really looks 3D in Ha

Yes, but is the face coming out in front, or is it "cut into the cloud"

Great shot Dave!

Have to say I am very impressed with this image.

It's also very interesting that by spending, not a lot more on the base OTA price, (I guess about $1k) you've got a system that looks to be seeing limited.

Well done !

Thanks Peter yes I think the focuser was about $500 the flattener and extender tube about the same. Add a bit for the Takahashi Collimating Telescope. I have a full sized file available on my smugmug page. The one posted here has been downsized to fit the 200k file size limit.
