Jupiter fun

When I got my new rig (10" Meade SCT, Canon 60Da, other stuff) in December - my first astronomy kit for 25 years - the first thing I did was try to capture Jupiter. All totally haphazard, of course - my last attempy at astrophotography involved film, freezers and 40' exposures in 1986.

Nevertheless, I have bunged together a single 1/25" ISO 200 exposure of the whole system with a 3' AVI capture/align/stack with Regisatx 6 of the planet using the 640x480 movie crop of the 60Da plus 2x Barlow. It's a fun image.

Wow

Very cool. I have the 8" ACF and can't seen to get enough detail apart from the cloud bands

Hi Jon,

That's a great picture of Jupiter - nice details on the surface including the GRS...

Cheers,
Mark

Nice work Jon!
I've never used the movie mode on the Da, should give it a go.

Stacy - I have spent the last three months learning how effective things like unsharp masks, Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, wavelet filters and high pass filters can be in turning what looks like fuzzy cloud bands into sharp detail. I am still a way noob but I urge you persevere - it floors me how much this stuff makes a difference now.

Mark - thanks! You've got some great Jupiters that you've posted here.

Simon - I' really enjoying the planetary stuff that I can get with the 60Da. The crop mode is great. I got the camera for entry-level deep space imaging, but I'm also having fun with the moon and jupiter. The 2x Barlow has made all the difference as is boosts the real size of the Jupiter image from 100+ to 200+ pixels. I'm saving up for a 4x Televue Powermate :-)
