Damn Microsoft windows 64bit professional - its a dog

Here I am sedately trying to update and load software on a windows 64bit professional edition software. Coupled together with a Gigabyte Nvidia chipset, which has to run a resident program for network security and setup of system, itquite literally is the pits. I am limited with antiviral software and I dare say will find out that regular programs wont run. Its not my PC but one I have built for a guy. I should have sold him a 32 bit system intead but he insisted on the latest. There goes my entire RDO blown on this stupid thing

Even widows update isn't working well

Yes it is.

I have a copy, used it once last year - never again.

Had all sorts of issues, biggest were no 3rd party (decent) firewall or video card drivers. Seems not much has changed

eset has a very good AV program for winXP64 http://www.nod32-av.com/products/nt.htm

crappy software, now windows update has corrupted. i was supposed to deliver this tonight. at this rate he will get it next year

oh now I found there is a patch for the windows patch to patch windows 64pro.

Gee microsoft is really friendly. Everyone go to your windows now and open them, then at the top of your voice scream out , " I love Bill Gates, because I know he loves me, he gave me this wonderful product called windows"

99 percent of the time I will stand by my word, but this is rediculous, I cant even download that nod 32 antiviral software, it wont run unless MS patch no XXXXX is loaded on the system. I am buggered no matter what.

OK guys, will XP windows 32 run on a 64 bit machine?

RB I have manually updated the patches and now I can access the MS patch update centre. So far this morning I have downloaded 400mb, and I haven't even done office yet?

footnote - never ever try to load active x in the 64 bit version of INternet explorer, you will be there for a while wondering why its not working. make sure you are in the 32 bit version. Trying to update Office 2003 and it has taken me over 30 minutes to work thi one out. LOL big dope I am

I recently sold my 64Bit comp to a friend, I was using it to test Windows Vista (64bit) and the driver situation for 64Bit O/S is lacking in the extreme. I also used XP Pro 64 on it but the drivers proved just as hard to find.
Before I sold it I installed the 32Bit version of XP Pro on it, it runs well and so far there has been no problems with it.
All hardware installed without issues, printer, scanner, video card, system drivers, RAID driver etc, and installation of the software went just as smoothly.
You can get the Nvidia firewall running in 32Bit (as I did) so my suggestion is go back to 32Bit O/S

for the minute I have everything working. Touch wood

simple software build gone wrong again. If it does stuff up when he gets it and starts to use it, I will do just that, go back to XP 32bit

i dont' want to start a new post but this might make you feel, well, if not "better" at least not alone.

I spent a whole afternoon, about 6 hours, trying to rebuild my computer using a SATA raid as the main disk. Trying to install windows would either fail to recognise the drive or crash just after starting to install. Ok, so played with BIOS for at least an hour, changing settings, playing around, swapping ports, trawling tech forums, finally convinced myself that I have it right and that can't be the problem.

So it's gotta be a disk or the controller on the MOBO... More trawling forums, dug up an IDE drive I had kicking around and installed that as the primary disk and what do you know? the raid works as a secondary. Ok, time for diagnostic tools, downloaded a bunch of disk checking utils and spent over an hour doing low level tests on my raid: NOTHING! Not a single problem!

ok, back to installing windows on the raid, same problem! I'm literally at my wit's end at this stage. I'm about to start writing to my motherboard's tech forum when I slowly re-read all the error codes I've been getting for the tenth time, reading one of the errors it occured to me that I was using a XP Pro SP2 windows install disk but the raid drivers I had on disk came out BEFORE SP2, so on a hunch I dug up an old XP Pro SP1 install cd

and

it worked 1st time

like a charm

6 hours after I started....

I saw so much red, if there was anyone else in my room at the time I swear I would have murdered them.

I know it is a bit out of date but xp pro with sp2, plus install the 64 bit drivers for the board...its the only good way to use this setup...
i use linux 99% of the time and find ubuntu, mandriva and centos all work in 64 bit..FC x86_64 is a pain but will work ok with tweeking it..
64 bit windows is a swear word with some windows friends and they say use server 2003...
I'm not a windows advocate but i do watch movies via my pc and the dvd's that are encrypted dont work on linux..(a deal made by GPL killed the idea)..
the other thing is i'm too lazy to compile a driver for the av out on my graphics card...
