galactic alignment 21 December 2012

well just 21 days left till this very rare event. It only happens every 26,000 years. It could be the end of the world??? What are your predictions?

Hi Laurie,

That would have to be nearly the worst movie ever made. No one is that lucky to get away at the very last second that many times.

How riveting was that movie, I was asleep within 10 minutes of starting to watch that.

As for predictions, we'll still be here on the 22nd.

Interesting that the world survived the last time, 26,000 years ago. Maybe it's due to the Mayans not being there at the time to lead to the prediction.

Cheers

An extract from Bigpond 'News' (Bit of a stretch calling the service they provide news).

According to the ancient Mayan calendar the end of the world will fall upon us on December 21, and one shop in the Siberian town of Tomsk is cashing in.
The wedding salon is selling Apocalypse kits containing a bottle of vodka labelled 'Live vodka', a tin can of sardines, a box of matches, some candles, a piece of soap, a length of rope, various medicines, a bandage and a notebook, labelled 'Notes to the Future'.

I guess the rope and notepaper is their backup plan for when the vodka runs out. They really have thought of everything...

A serious hangover from the end of world celebrations the night before.

Sure was Al.

"Can't stop the Music" with the Village People.

I saw it at the cinema in the 80's with my Nan & Auntie, they insisted on singing along to all the songs. There was nowhere for me to hide.

I'm mentally scarred as a result and still receiving therapy to this day.

This alignment with the galaxy center is a funny one. People didn't know we align with the galactic center about the same time every year.

Bad science. Hilariously funny. Shame the cricket ran overtime and the PVR missed the last few minutes. Does Tamara get out alive?

The significance this time around is that (ostensibly) the alignment happens on the date of the (southern) summer solstice. This indeed only happens once every 26,000 years.
However, I used the discounting term 'ostensibly' because to my understanding the alignment was closest back in 1998.

The tsunami of dgaf washing over me at this juncture in time precludes me from elaborating further.

ok, so maybe one more nibble at it.....

Also, I think it needs to be said that the Mayans didn't conflate this celestial alignment with the end of the world. To my understanding it might be more accurately translated as the end of a cycle or period.

Looking at the world today it is hard to argue against us being witness to cultural point of inflection.
We live in interesting times to be sure.

Caveat: At any point in history preceding us, our ancestors might have made the same claim.

Actually... come to think of it.
Justin Bieber surely must be the result of an unholy coupling of Quetzalcoatl and the dude in the skin tight red lycra gimp suit and plastic horns featured in many a theistic tome ... so there might be something in this after all.

Funny Brendan. See http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/faqcalcmove.shtml for the explanation of the web page change. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/#declination is the replacement page for declination.

I still prefer GA's web page for Australian values.
