Hello everyone
First up, the data for this was acquired by my SRO partner, Bill Snyder so this is just my version of the end result.
http://www.martinpughastrophotograph.../NGC7023v1.jpg
8 hours or so LRGB of this lovely reflection nebula in Cepheus and surrounding gas.
thanks for checking it out.

Newbies take note: this is what makes a good deep-sky image, great.
perfectly guided stars
perfect focus
good star colour variation.
noise well controlled
well controlled highlight and shadow details
no processing artifacts (stars don't have black/cyan/magenta or weird colour dark rings)
Or... just have a squizz at one of Martin's images.
Just sublime as usual Martin.

And a lazy $50,000 + worth of gear, great skies and location, exemplary skills in processing, etc, etc.

Dark skies help
Clear skies help even more
But at shorter FL's seeing becomes irrelevant.
...and having a frank and honest critique of images will hone your processing skills. ("Gee, that's really good" PC responses to very average efforts don't achieve much )
I don't subscribe to the notion you think you need to drop $50k to create excellent images.
You do however need a good eye.
Again, nice one Martin.

Martin,
That's the way dark nebula should look in my opinion, so silky, such a lovely capture. Thanks for sharing.

A great shot Martin.
You are lucky getting all these wonderful northern objects as well as the southern.
Greg.

I'm sorry, Peter, you are quite right, I mean, to think that a mount that costs $20,000 and is of a higher machine quality is better than a mount that costs $2,000 or a scope that costs $1,000 will have as good an objective and focuser as a $10,000 scope. I must have been crazy to think like that. Once again, I apologize!

<rant>May I ask what the point of spamming someone elses image in Martin's thread is? It is frankly unneccessary, and, quite rude. I've been on the receiving end of this before and it is disheartening.
Who cares if Bill's image has more contrast in the centre, or if x has more than y? This is supposed to be, what I like to refer to as a creatively subjective art(istic) hobby, not a pixel peeping game.
If you were trying to help a newcomer to the game by showing them an image that they should aspire to, or to even inspire them, or guiding someone towards an ideal image, or even providing constructive criticism, that's one thing, but, to post a comparison image to someone who is one of the finest imagers in the world... ?
You're welcome to do comparisons all you like, just keep them out of the original poster's thread.</rant>
Martin, that is yet another exceptional image, processed to the finesse of your usual standard.

Hello- they were using the same data - it was a team effort!
Next time at least read the thread first before getting angry.
Take a chill pill.

Ok.
When I read:

I couldn't resist to go hunting for any version
that Bill Snyder may have made of this same target, same data.
Wow - I found it & posted the link.
To find that Bill's version was slightly better in only one small area
was actually a compliment to Martin.
However - you do have a point as well.
I should probably only post nice comments.
My grandmother used to tell me.
"if you can't say something nice its better to say nothing at all."
I wish that I had followed her advice -
I'd probably have a lot more friends today.
