Do you name your scopes and why

People get attached (figuratively, emotionally and literally) to their scopes and I noticed some name their scopes (yes, I am refereeing to you Jen and Johnny ). So do you name your scopes? What's the story behind their names?
I try not to name my equipment, but am curious to find out from others that do.
Cheers,
Bo

No, I never have. A machine is a machine is a machine to me. I think that unless I had something commissioned, as per an SDM or similar where many put their heart and sole speccing up their ultimate child, I'd never bother - seems a little silly to me. LOL

Others are understandably different though...

I do call my Landrover "The Rover" though... if that's anything to go by.

I have named my scopes in the past.
My 10" Dob was called the "Annie Jump Cannon"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Jump_Cannon
And my 8" BD Newt was called "MaeC" after Dr Mae C Jemison.

ATM my ED80 is called "Don't touch it" and the mount "Leave it alone"

Completely agree. It is interesting to note though that men tend to gender-ize inanimate objects by feminine reference.

"She's a beauty!"

Soooooooooooooo... Since I do have a love for all things female...

I guess "She" is the appropriate answer...
OIC!

I try to give mine suitably descriptive names. Hence 'Rusty', 'Dusty' and 'Doorstop'.

Only one has a name the other is a namless creature of the night

Bertha is my little newts name because just about everything on it including the scope is chunky Plus on the EQ6 its starting to move to the larger end of it all.

Thanks Ken for saving us all a lot of time! I still love my Mary Rose for all of the same reasons as stated in that earlier thread.

I refer to mine as "the Tasco" because the name really grates with those infatuated with high-end optics.

Cheers -

Hahahaha!

Yes, I name my equipment, I can't help it and I don't really know why... maybe because it's mine, ALL MINE and I'm possessive!?

My friend's 10" Dob that she was letting me borrow was dubbed by us as "Pavo". My binos are called Ganymede, my future scope will be called Berenice (unless I change my mind by then ). My car's name is Birgitte Silverbow or Birgie for short (can anyone guess what this name is referring to? ), my 60D was Reginald Steichen and when it got destroyed by a wave, I got a new 60D and called it Reginald Steichen II

My pillow is called Brian? I joke, I joke!

Hi All,

Never named a telescope before the present one. My best mate has a 20" known locally as the "Total Perspective Vortex", so I decided to give my 18" (after I had "bonded" with the 'scope) a name -- the Argus Panoptes for fairly obvious reasons.

Best,

Les D
