Help Getting Started

Hi all,

I’m a complete novice so be gentle with me.

My setup is a 6" Dob and a Canon 1000D hand held against the eyepiece.

Last night was my first attempt at taking some pictures and not knowing too much about the camera or the scope I was quite happy with the results. I had some success with Jupiter and the Moon and attempted M45 but it just didn’t have enough light to really see it through the camera.

However, I’m in need of some expert help in understanding which settings are best to use on the camera as well as some very basic guidance in image processing (I have Photoshop CS5) and stacking etc.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi Sean,
Pretty good result on the moon there. Can't give you to much advice on that method except the sooner you can stop hand holding the camera the more hands you will have to do the other stuff. Others will came to your help. A quick 'levels' in Photoshop brought out your Jupiter a bit more but there is not much data to work with in that shot.
Cheers

Get a Canon T-Ring adapter, contact Bintel and they will be able to help you get the parts to attach your camera to the scope, it is inexpensive and you will get a way way better result. Grab one of the very cheap Bahtinov masks to improve your focus (look in the classifieds section here on IIS)
Then you can look into stacking a few images etc.

Welcome Sean and great first image there.

Settings will really depend on what you are taking a shot of. The moon is a great object to get a handle on, especially shooting the way you are through the eyepiece. M45 will require either a higher ISO or longer exposure to gather enough light.

As for some starting settings ... put everything on manual including focus. Open up the aperture (the lower the 'f' number the more light you are letting in).

Then you need to balance the ISO and shutter as they work in concert together. Higher ISO means the camera is more sensitive to the light so better in darker situations. Problem is that it increases the "noise" you also capture. If you are holding the camera by hand, then you want a shorter exposure to remove the wobble. This means you may need a higher ISO to compensate.

Poita's idea is a great one. The quicker you can get your hands off the camera the better. You'll be able to take longer exposures with less movement. Just remember to set the camera with a 2 or 3 second delay. This way, you hit the button and the whole set-up has a few seconds to stop wobbling.

There have been some fantastic shots taken through a Dob so keep at it!

Cheers,
Af.

Check firmware version > 1.0.5 - critical update for 1000D and variants. Otherwise the camera will eventually malfunction. If you bought it recently, should be OK.

Focus is also possible with live view x10.

Great start. Moon is very good.
