Hi guys,

From Mike, via Facebook (sorry, Mike, but hopefully you're too busy imaging to respond!)

The IceInSpace website is being crushed under the weight of the many thousands of people looking for info about the eclipse - so you may experience timeouts and database errors.
Please be patient - hopefully we can keep it up and running but no guarantees!
Thankfully Facebook is used to having much more traffic so I'll continue to post updates here.

Mike is updating via his facebook, and the IIS page on facebook as the night progresses. It's raining cats and dogs in Melbourne, so I'm having a grand old time watching everyone else's progress where it's clearing up.

to the new folks who have come to learn more about the eclipse, and for regulars, I'm guessing a little patience is the ticket - I'm sure normal transmission will be resumed soon

Ya the Eclipse must have cleared the lines... everyone is outside now.

Maximum looks pretty good, nice clear skies in Perth.

Just looked up the moon in Stellarium, had no idea that it show the Eclipse "Live" as well... Fairly accurate rendition...

I thought that it would be the numbers of guests etc that would be looking for info about the eclipse, however the "Currently active users" counter on the front page suggested there were only a few dozen online..I did wonder at its accuracy

Yeh sorry, IceInSpace was getting hammered by people looking for info about the eclipse.

I got in touch with Terry but there's nothing we could do - the server just doesn't have enough RAM to support the load. The database was just going crazy with connections and swapping back and forth from disk.

We'll have to upgrade the server before the Venus transit next year.

Thanks for passing on the update, Mishku. I saw the post here but when I tried to respond it just kept timing out. Facebook is used to many many times greater heavy traffic, so it was nice to be able to share the updates through the IceInSpace Facebook page.

The reason the number was showing low was because people kept getting dumped out and timing out so it wasn't registering. The 1361 that's there as the record was from the previous great lunar eclipse we had in August 2007.

It is accurate. One time I saw it last night between crashes, it had > 100 members and > 400 guests online at the same time.

The eclipse article ended up with > 60,000 views. Over 40,000 of those were yesterday alone.

If IceInSpace hadn't been crashing and timing out during that hour before midnight, I'm sure it would be another 10,000 higher!

Was a great night!
