sad

i have been a member of this great web site for a while now and i am sad at the trend it appears to be going (for me), when i joined the threads appeared to be open , happy and basically non judgemental, hey even a novice like myself didnt feel out of place talking to way more experienced folks.
But i gotta say with somethings getting written makes me feel kind of stupid, feel like im either left or right or uneducated, not a good feeling.
Im sorry I kinda find it hard to articulate what i am saying, i think some are losing what "i thought ISS was about" heck i am probably the one making the mistake!
Im not giving up on the web site, just keep watching it to see if it is a "phase" but seriously i lose most things half way through (im sure i am the only one) but please ease up we are not all fess heads!
have fun

We absolutely need more carbon tax threads. This is what this site is about, after all.

iss is also about discussion, we have and rightly so, had a religion discussion that got way out of hand before the moderators closed it,of course the carbon issue got a few heckles up, we had a an astronomy / astrology discussion and of course the obligatory football code discussion
you manage to see some respectable people in this community with very strange but often interesting minds with the strangest views
but hey thats what its all about
the london riot one right now is very interesting, some very strange views on it, i am glad some of these people were not my parents!

the problem isnt about difference of opinion it is about the way it is delivered! both sides of an idea used to put their sides across without prejudice, it was a fair and balanced input, now it is taking sides to the extreme. Insults fly, it is no longer about ones idea or thought it is a open slather of the opposition. Seriously i wouldnt want to put my 2cents worth up for debate!

Conversations about any topic between adults especially on this forum should be conducted with humility, respect and in good humour.

If you don't agree with someone's point of view say so in a polite succinct way but do not resort to name calling and inuendo.

Take a deep breath before responding but

I'll still respect you in the morning

If something is outrightly offensive or personally attacking, use the 'report bad post' button to bring it to the attention of the moderators.

The moderators don't read every single post of every single thread. Especially the really long ones that just end up with a minority of people repeating themselves or going over the same arguments.

If you don't like what you're reading, just ignore that thread.

If you genuinely don't like someone's point of view on a consistent basis, put them on your ignore list and you won't see any posts from them again.

You have to remember that those threads that you don't like are the minority, and are the views of a very small number of people. It's really easy to just ignore them, don't click on them, and don't let it ruin your IIS experience. You can't judge the whole forum experience from the actions of a minority.

I have to admit, I've mentioned before that it can be a bit intimidating here.
It's difficult to be light hearted and any time you pop in a bit of fun, someone takes umbrage.

I sometimes tell myself I won't comeback, but I do because I want to learn

It's easy to feel inadequate in the presence of others who seem smarter, but IQ or level of education are not good measures of a person's worth I think.

If you have self respect and care about others you've got most of what it takes to be a worthwhile human being. (IMHO)

Yes, I think we all go through stages like that Jen.
I'll back away for a while, go invisible.
And come back when I feel better.
They really are a great crowd in here.

I've been too chicken to post for fear of saying something silly, but I'll pipe in now to say.... though it all seems a bit intimidating as a brand spanking new backyard astronomer, i look forward to learning lots more!

Yep, I like a little bit of brand spanking every now and then....grabbing an OMO box and slapping it around. Punching out a bottle of cordial or kicking the Corn Flakes around

Very therapeutic

Welcome to IIS

If the Terms of Service are respected by all this place will be the better for it

I have tried to resist the temptation and ignored some threads, but on occasions I have failed

Yes, I will take the advice I have received from some members and use the report button.

Most of the topics that are in question start of okay, but just a few members will always throw in insulting comments just to stir up trouble.

Cheers
Richard

ps

I agree with you Luvmybourbon, some members do flaunt their perceived genius and put others down, instead of politely advising the person concerned.

I promise myself I wont comment but cant help myself sometimes and say stuff and raise an alternative view point.

I try to just check the photos new developments etc. but I get tempted. I dont like to talk about what gear I am using what photos I take anymore others can do that...

But as Mike said there are tools to use to make the site as perfect as you percieve it to be...

I am probably on more dont read lists than anyone so dont worry about saying something be honest be yourself others can edit you out if they dont like you etc...its no big deal.

There are no dumb questions when you are learning.

i have no problems with ISS or anyone on here i just thought the tone a style had changed, While i dont post very often, i often pop in here to see whats happening. I love this web site and love looking at the photos taken (geez how good it would be to have some hanging on the wall) and one day when finances allow i would hope to join the rest of you photographers
Anyway always remember either be good or be good at it and dont get caught!!!!!!
