Watch the sizes of the files, broadband recommended. if you only have dial up, then pm your email and i will try and cut them up a little smaller.

try jjj's first, it will give you a good feel for what your movies should look like when the seeing is great. Load the movies into registax and cut your teeth on it so to speak.
Once you have had a good go, try downloading mine which has been split up into red, green and blue channels. This means you have to process each lot in registax separately and then combine in astral image etc. This is more advanced, but it amazing how the different wavelengths vary in registax re quality and resulting wavelets sensitivity!
I have had trouble getting colour with JJJ's, not sure why i could get any?

I downloaded it and started playing. In your instructions about AstraImage, you say to convert the RGB images into grayscale and rename them. How do you rename them?! I cant seem to find the option at all.
I used VirtualDub to convert the image stream back into AVI's and it worked great as well (as an alternative to Bink and Smacker).
I had a go at processing your data David. It took me two days (at work ) of stuffing around with the different programs, and in the end I dont think its anywhere near as good as the result you would have come up with using the same data. One is origional size, the other is 1.5x.
I used VirtualDub to process them back into AVI's, your guide in Registax, combine in Astra Image (some LR/ME) and then Gimp to paste the end result.

well done simon, i just love playing with great data. there is so many ways to go with the image and whos to say which is right or better???
i like softer finishes personally and other guys and girls prefer other finishes.
the main thing is that you have had a solid work out and when you get your own great seeing night, your processing skills mean you can get a great finished product
I had another crack at the data again today. Looking at the other images people are posting at the moment (including DP), I find the softer images much easier to look it. This time I used the 1.5x mitchell resample option in Registax, and different (softer) wavelet settings. I think this is a much better looking image all round.
ps. I encourage anyone that is interested in planetry imagery that doesnt currently have all the equipment needed to have a go at this (like me!). It will give you an idea (and a grounding) of what to expect when processing data, and all the steps that are nessary to get a great looking image. It sure takes more effort than I thought it did before having a go (and I only had to deal with the last half of the process!). Next step is to get my own tracking, better barlow, laptop, ToUcam.. ARGH!
The last one is nice Simon, it's just a little darker..
By the way, you don't need to "re-create an avi" from the BMP's - you can dump the BMP's straight into registax using windows explorer. Just ctrl-A to select the BMP's, have registax already open on the front page, and drag the bmp's into registax.
Mike: now you tell me! I find it easier to work with them all as a single file anyways, but that might just be me.
This is the last time I bump this thread I promise. I had a go at JJJ's data as well for something to do. I tried processing it straight from the avi, then centered using ppm, then centered and split into RGB. The centered/RGB'd one ended up turning out the best and is below.
Did you have a crack at it DP? Im colour blind, and Im using an LCD, but I cant seem to get any colour happening in it, or is there another reason for that?

Just a quicky, I'm finding it tricky to drag my final completed pic from Astra Image to photoshop.The program says its an 'evaluation' sample, so it wont allow you to save the finished image.Any clues?
You've written in your tutorial..."To save your image, whilst holding shift, press Prnt Scrn, move over to Photoshop or something similiar and paste the image. Arrange and your away!!!".....its not letting me do this.
by shift + prnt scrn you are copyng and then I go to photoshop and ctrl+n for new canvas and then paste, cut it out of the screen shot and you can place it anywhere you like

yes no colour in JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ's unfortunately as the capture was great, some of her more recent ones had more colour!
Ok well I lied, Im bumping it again. I downloaded the data from the 15/02/06 and had a go at processing it. Im having problems with it though in some of the steps.
Firstly, when I split the AVI into RGB channels using AVIRAW, the R and G are ok, but the blue AVI looks shocking. It processes okish, but the frames arent nearly as good as the R and G. The second problem is when I try and centre the images using ppmcentre it cuts the moon out of just about all frames. Its probably just an option Im missing or something?
I processed it using the unzipped AVI, but it didnt turn out nearly as good as I know it could.
ps. the image scale on the unzipped AVI is a bit larger than the other AVI I downloaded, was anything different?

ppmcentre -width=640 -height=480 ...............etc or whatever size you need to keep the moon in

with a 5xpowermate (http://televue.com/engine/page.asp?ID=42), the further you have you toucam away from the powermate, you increase the size from 5x up to a 7.7x. Iceman and I as trying to put together a extension tube instead of hanging the toucam precariously out of the end of the powermate.
