Orion and Runningman at Lostock

Hi Guys,

This is taken with my 20DA and Orion ED80 auto guided with the LPI through the WO 80mm Zenithstar on the EQ6.

10 x 8 minute exposure's at ISO 800.

The trap is overexposed but I have not learnt the masking technique as yet....but I like it anyway....I can get bring out more faint detail on this image but prefer a bit of eye candy as Louie would say.

No flats or darks or bias shots added...sorry itchy....lol...they will come in future shots.

Stacked & Proccessed in imagesplus and made pretty in Photoshop....NO noise reduction used on camera or in processing.

The horsehead and flame is to come but had some real issues with the noise/signal ratio.

tell me, the other day when the seeing was great, i was watching jupiter on my computer screen and marvelled at the detail; it was amazing. Do you get a similiar buzz whilst imaging over the 8 minutes.

Does it develop there in front of you on the computer / camera screen at say 20 seconds and then at say 2 minutes, running man starts to appear??

No it does not appear infront of your eyes at intermediate intervals through the exposure as the exposure is not complete till it's done...so you only see the image once the exposure is finished than transfered to your PC/Laptop.

But saying that 1 single raw image of 8 minutes as it is presented to you on screen is awesome even unprocessed.

The end result is awesome Tony, well done mate! That "travel" set up (which most people would kill for) of yours sure came up with the goods.

They looked awesome coming straight from the camera after only 3mins, end result even better!

i got excited over my smudged 30 second orion thru the sorta tracking of my dob on the exposed toucam.

i am looking forward in a few years time to see this popping onto the screen after downloading from a 350d!!

Great shot there.
I think the warm weather does have the disadvantage of noisier images. I read that an 8 degree drop in temp. means half the noise, so once summer leaves we can lok fowards to less noisy imaging

Mate that is a gorgeous image - I never tire of seeing this incredible deep sky vista.

Many years ago I went on a camp with mates to the Warrumbungle nat. Park, within sight of the Anglo Australian Telescope dome. It was in July. Back then I had a car that could carry my 10 inch scope, the scope tube one night was covered in frost at 8 pm under dark skies. Oh if only digital cameras existed back then, at about -5 degrees the imaging would have been fantastic. As it was we had some Hypered Tech Pan 2415 film which we developed in chemicals mixed up with river water, real bush processing lol.

Nice work Tony,
I hope you don't mind but I did a little hack on this with a 1min trap I took awhile back. The scale & rotate isn't perfect but you get the idea!

Great work both of you. It's great watching the images appear on the back of Tony's camera. On that small scale it almost feels like "Hmmm, don't know what else needs to be done to this". I do know however that Tony spent a bit of time going through the process of processing this image.

Robby what ISO did you use? I tried 30 sec at 800 and got burnt out at that time.

Robby it looks great.....I have virtualy the same image as you have posted as my wallpaper but without the extra detail of the trap you have provided.

I am always getting told on this forum to leave the detail with the noise so I decided to post the noisy image on the forum and then redit mine with less noise and slightly darker back ground to keep personaly...lol

I much prefer to look at what you and I have have finished with then added noise like I originaly posted.

My opinion.....before I start getting nasty PM's...hehehe

Paul, I used ISO800 1min for the trap shot. It was with the C8 f/6.3, so 1260mm f/l if that helps.
Can't remember much else about it.

Hmmm, I used the Orion 80 so that's only f/7.5 at 600mm f/l. Can you pm or email me with some details as to how you brought out the trap (curves or levels adjustments etc ) or email me the original so I can see what it looked like before processing. Don't want to hijack Tony's thread.

this was my effort that night, Scott alder kindly put together the image from a few images i took. Just a comparison from the Pentax to the wonderful 20da again .

I love your image by the way, its way better than anything I have seen for a while

Did you get any good results of the orion the night I was down there with you....taken was with the 8" from memory.
